The Wurtherington Diary: Tammy and the Declaration of Independence Art by Duy Truong "Hear, Hear!" With that we all pushed through the door and climbed the staircase that led to the Liberty Bell. Everyone wondered who should ring it. Many wanted me to ring it and I agreed only if John Hancock would do it with me. We all agreed that John Hancock represented the entire body and it should be him. We shared the rope and rang the bell. It was crisp and clear. "Let freedom ring!" they shouted. The bell, as we had anticipated, gained a crack in its side and to this day it stands as a symbol of freedom for all to see.

Pretty much everyone was aware of the Colonial Square grand opening in 1959. The opening of 16 new stores including Wayzata Rexall Drug, Red Owl, Ben Franklin Variety, Community Credit, Coast to Coast, Olson’s Shoes, Walbom’s Apparel, Pink Pony and Colonial Coiffures was a big deal in the west metro. The shopping center boasted of design innovations and grand opening celebrations stretched from October through November. Visitors to the new center saw, as the Minnetonka Herald reported Oct. 1, 1959, “a striking use of color and highlights of wood paneling throughout.” The interior lighting used was new for this area of the country, which was supposed to to be three times brighter than conventional lighting.

The Wurtherington Diary: Tammy and the Declaration of Independence Art by Duy Truong and Nour Hassan Paul Revere was surprised that my associates were so talkative but he got over it as the situation was desperate and the fate of the entire revolution was at stake. He gave it a moment's thought and said, “Tammy, you will ride with me.” I put Alfred on my shoulder and hopped up on the horse and held on to Paul Revere. “Hold on tight, little one. This is going to be some ride!”

For those that aren't familiar with the "Join, or Die" graphic, it is a historic image created by Benjamin Franklin around 1754 and represents the quest for strength and freedom through solidarity. Each part of the snake represents one of the first colonies of the United States.

Art by Duy Truong This scene is from the Wurtherington Diary: The Declaration of Independence. As far as I could tell the tune was a waltz. It was difficult to tell as it could best be described as musical mayhem; although they did it in perfect two-part harmony. We listened to several tunes and each one was funnier than the last. "Bravo, bravo!" Mr. Scott offered an applause for the effort that had him belly laughing.
