Cambodia Tapestries

The Ta Prohm Temple within the Angkor Wat Archaeological Park is a marvel to behold because of the way the jungle has encroached in and over the temple structure. The temple was abandoned during the 15th century after the fall of the Khmer Empire and only "rediscovered" over the past century or so. During this lost time, the banyan trees have grown up and out of the stonework. The trees are gigantic, but it is the roots that are so fascinating in the way they have snaked their way down over the ruins. Over time these roots have forced their way into the temple stonework, forcing it apart, with the result that much of the temple is in collapse. This image is of the Banteay Kdei temple, or at least a part it, in the Angkor Archaeological Park near Siem Reap, Cambodia. The temple was built during the 12th century. While not the largest of the Angkorian temples, it has many of the features of Bayon and Ta Prohm. When capturing this image, I was particularly drawn to the wonderful architectural style and the robustness of the structure. This was a building that was built to last; look at the exposed structure of the roof in the portion that has collapsed.

A vivid sunrise at Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Deep in the jungles of Cambodia lies the majestic temple city of Angkor Wat.

This image was captured near the top of the Baphuon Temple. At 34 metres high, getting to the top of the temple is a bit of a challenge. It's not that the 34 metres are excessive, it's the incredibly steep, very wide, and very well worn stone staircases that causes the trepidation. You have nothing but your fingernails to hold you in place, Those stone steps had, no doubt, witnessed millions of feet and so were not as flat as they once had been. The descent was best navigated by going down backwards. Back to the image, which depicts the wonderful columns and arches that adorn the top of the 2nd tier of the temple. With the temple being roughly square, these columns went around each side, with the remains of an old tower in the middle...

You need to get there early to see Angkor Wat at its best. The early morning light brings tranquility to this remarkably peaceful place. Of course, you are not alone. Angkor Wat is the biggest tourist attraction in Cambodia, it even appears on the national flag. But the place is so enormous that finding a spot without tourists is not difficult. The temple was originally dedicated to the Indian god, Vishnu, but became a Buddhist temple within a hundred years of its construction, which started during the early 12th century. This image is a view along the first inner gallery.

This image is of just one of the hundreds of bas relief carvings that cover the walls of the lower gallery at Angkor Wat. All-in-all, the carvings run for about 600 yards around the four sides of the temple. These carvings celebrate religious and historical epics. The undertaking to complete just these cravings, which represent just a small proportion of the overall temple, must have taken years. The carvings, which are sheltered from the elements are in remarkably good shape considering they were carved about 900 years ago. To understand the scale of the temple complex, it covers an area of about 200 hectares (490 acres). This image was captured within the ruins of the Banteay Kdei Temple, in the Angkor Archaeological Park, near Siem Reap, Cambodia. The tower is one of several at the site. Looking at the way the walls and towers were constructed, it would appear that the sandstone blocks were mounted in place and then carved as needed.

This is an image of the open, outer gallery on the south side of the Angkor Wat temple. The temple is enormous. Although we were there with many hundreds of others, it wasn't difficult to find incredible views, such as this, without another person in sight. Although the temple was built about 900 years ago, it is a remarkable testament to its builders in that it remains an incredible architectural masterpiece today. It is an awe inspiring experience to walk through the complex, one that I won't forget. What I love about this image is the incredible depth; the vanishing point at the far end. Think of the engineering required to build something so straight all those years ago.
