As soon as I saw this spot as I strolled around Kaikoura early in the morning on my third visit there, I knew it was the perfect place to start the day. If only I'd had a newspaper to sit down and read while I listened to the waves running through the black pebbles on the beach!

I spent pretty much my entire first trip to Akaroa being astounded by the beauty. I spent my entire day just wandering the shoreline, and after dinner I snuck out of a game of Scrabble at my hostel to be greeted by this beauty. Taken in 2008 using my Panasonic FZ18.

Traveling from Christchurch to Akaroa, you will pass by idyllic Barry's Bay; an area known for walking, cheese, and vineyards.

This historic bridge which spans the entrance to the Waiau Gorge is located below the junction to the Hanmer and Waiau Rivers and was opened in 1887. Now you can bungy jump from the bridge or jet boat below, then continue to high country Hanmer Springs and the hot pools.

The Tree Fern

Once we crossed Arthur's Pass on the road between the South Island's west and east coasts, the landscape drastically changed. Gone were the lush green forests of the west coast; they had been replaced with an almost arid, mottled brown landscape. As you would expect with NZ, though, it was still stunningly gorgeous!

The beautiful scene that greeted us in the Tekapo Domain after we ate dinner nearby. The lupins lined the lakeshore for as far as we could see, the clouds were perfect after a day of drizzly rain, and the lake was a perfect shade of blue.
