In 1970, one of the more bizarre chapters in Italian American history began when an infamous Italian American from Brooklyn, NY created the Italian American Civil Rights League! Formed to fight discriminatory representations of Italians in American media and news, the league exploded onto the scene with star-studded and sold out benefit concerts in Madison Square Garden, and, on June 29, 1970, they rallied nearly 100,000 Italian Americans in Manhattan’s Columbus Circle for the first ever “Italian American Unity Day”. Yet, just a year later, the second Unity Day ended in violence and bloodshed, and the IACRL quickly faded into the pages of history. I've made this design of fused skulls that got overgrown with mushrooms. I love how mushrooms look and I also added blind eyeballs into the skull to make it look creepier. Creepy is good!

The Chinese-takeout container, with its Japanese-influenced origami folds, is a uniquely American invention. In 1894, Chicago inventor Frederick Weeks Wilcox patented the “paper pail,” which was a single piece of paper, creased into segments and folded into a container. It was 1973 when a young graphic designer working for a national packaging company added a Chinese pagoda with 'Thank You' in red ink to the previously plain white containers that changed the look of take out forever. Later, 'Enjoy' would be tagged on as an option and the design would be replicated on bags and other containers used by Chinese restaurants for their takeout orders, though don't expect to find these boxes in China, as these are strictly a North American thing.
