How gorgeous is this? I was lucky enough to get perfect weather for two nights running during my stay on the shores of Lake Menesjärvi, and it could not have been more beautiful. The midnight sun -- to the right of this frame -- made the clouds light up in different colours for hours on end and the lake was so still that it looked like this jetty was just floating in the sky. Vintage illustration astronomy and celestial image featuring an antique star chart map of the northern sky. This planisphere is from the astronomical atlas Astronomicum Caesareum by Petrus Apianus (Peter Apian) (1495-1552). Includes constellations of mythical creatures and people, signs of the Zodiac, Ursa Major (bear), Hydra and Pegasus, the winged horse. This atlas was notable for its highly intricate wheel charts (volvelles), of which this planisphere is an example. A volvelle involves several layers of paper placed over each other, which are then rotated to produce the desired result. In this case, to show the appearance of the night sky for a given latitude, time and date.

I set out to walk the length of Svinøya Island in Svolvær to see some stockfish (cod that spend all winter drying on racks around the Lofoten Islands) up close and personal. While I was successful in this mission, I was also saw some absolutely stunning views of the fjord surrounding Lofoten's capital as well.

In the centre on the mountain side is the formation called "Svolværgeita," or the goat of Svolvær. In the summer you can climb to the top of it and stand in the goat's horns!
