Constructed in 1908, The Union Building at No 212 King Street West in Toronto Ontario is a six floor mixed use building at the NW corner of King & Simcoe Sts. Originally the head office of the Canadian General Electric Company it has been listed on the City Of Toronto Inventory of Heritage Properties. In 1957 an international competition was held for a design of a new city hall. A total of 520 designs were received from 42 different countries. The winner of the competition was Finnish architect Viljo Revell. In 1965 Toronto's fourth city hall opened and still serves as the home of the city's council. The 27 storey east tower and the 20 storey west tower surround the saucer shaped council chamber. The saddest part of the history of our current city hall is that Revell died of a heart attack at 54 years old just 10 months prior to the opening ceremonies and never got to see his vision completed. Opened in 1894 and restored with new fire escapes after the Great Fire of 1904, the 2,765 seat Massey Hall at No 178 Victoria St in Toronto Ontario has played host to concerts, lectures, weddings, movies, boxing matches, beauty contests, religious and political rallies, typing contests and chess tournaments. The building was designated an Ontario Heritage Property in 1973 and a National Historic Site of Canada in 1981. On a personal note... An inland bay off Lake Ontario (one of the Great Lakes) provided the marshy setting for this evocative image of bulrushes & lily pads... Application of a digital filter has produced a rich, almost jewel-like glow to the image.

This image is of a group of coniferous trees that I quite often pass when travelling to and from our cottage. The trees sit alone in a field, surrounded by the crops for that year: sometimes it's corn, sometimes it's wheat, but regardless of the crop their isolation makes for such a simple image. What I love about this image is its splendid simplicity. The wonderfully clear sky with that gradient that moves from azure through orange, yellow and red to the fiery orb of the setting Sun. The fields ablaze in the golden light and the silhouetted trees against that sky. A sight to behold.

When visiting Bayfield in the autumn, it always an excuse to get out and take some pictures of the fall colours. A short distance from our cottage is Pioneer Park, which overlooks Lake Huron. There's a lovely row of maple trees by the park. It's difficult not to like this image.

I often take a walk to the end of the pier at Bayfield, There's often a group of fishermen there trying their luck. They stand there, chatting with friends, hoping to catch the "big one".

This image, originally captured on film in 1986, depicts the end of a stormy day over Lake Huron. It's close to sunset, but the Sun is only evident through some breaks in the heavy clouds. The pier at Bayfield, Ontario is almost awash with the wind driven waves breaking over it, but the navigation beacon stands proud amidst the turbulence. To me, this image expresses the feeling of 'it's good to be alive'. I hope you get that sense as well.

The building was recently renovated and now serves as the administrative wing of a neighbouring health care facility. Completed in 1890 and almost destroyed by a fire in 1954, The Bloor Street United Church at No 300 Bloor St W in Toronto Canada had such a large congregation during the 1940s and 1950s that bigger locations had to be rented for the services. The Allan Gardens Conservatory Palm House at 19 Horticultural Ave in Toronto Canada. The conservatory was built in 1879. In 1902, a fire destroyed the Horticultural Pavilion and parts of the conservatory. It's replacement, the cast iron and glass domed Palm House opened in 1910 and stands on the site today. This image shows some of the intricate and detailed work on many of the exterior walls of Old City Hall in Toronto. A bit about the architect and the designer (E.J. Lennex of Toronto) has been written in some of my previous images of City Hall. Although Lennox said little about the above designs, it has been said that the carved stone faces at the top of several of the columns resemble those of the politicians who criticised his work at the time. One theory suggests that the politicians are trapped in the fires of hell, as depicted in “Dante’s Inferno,” with the leaves around the faces representing the flames. Hope you like this one. Canadian Maple Leaf - Smoked Grey

It was a late winter day as I overlooked Lake Huron from the cliff at Pioneer Park, in Bayfield, Ontario. The Sun was shining, but there was snow forecast for later in the day. The ice, pushed ashore by the wind, stretched as far as the eye could see. The accumulation of ice on the ends of piers was piled high, the result of early winter storms when the spray would freeze and remain through the winter. But, spring would soon be here and the lake would again be transformed into its more obviously watery self.
