Gonna take you to a dive bar. The Tiki has had a greater influence on the modern art world than many realize. The 20th century saw a rise in American’s fascination with the Pacific Islands and their native culture. Images of the traditional life of native islanders captivated the residents of the Continental U.S. and brought about a desire to fill their mundane environment with some of the iconography of the islands. Post World War II returning GI’s brought back images of the Pacific Islands and the fascination with Tiki emerged. By the 1960s Tiki could be seen everywhere. It adorned buildings, restaurants, motels and all manner of advertising. Exports of authentic Tiki could not keep up with the demand.

A tiki bar is a themed drinking establishment that serves elaborate cocktails, especially rum-based mixed drinks such as the Mai Tai and Zombie cocktails. Tiki bars are aesthetically defined by their tiki culture décor which is based upon a romanticized conception of tropical cultures, most commonly Polynesian. Some bars also incorporate general nautical themes or retro elements from the early atomic age

Setting sail on May 1, 1976, the Hōkūleʻa embarked from Hawaii on her 2,500-mile voyage, arriving in Tahiti on June 4, thirty-four days after departing from Honolua Bay, Maui. Billed as the Bicentennial Voyage of Rediscovery, the primary goal of this trip was to support the theory of Asiatic origin of native Oceanic people, Polynesians, and Hawaiians, while proving that ancient open water voyaging techniques and non-instrument navigation allowed for migration and travel. In Hawaiian, the name Hōkūleʻa means 'Star of Gladness' and refers to Arcturus, one of the guiding stars for Hawaiian navigators, which passes directly over Hawaii’s latitude, helping guide sailors to the island chain.

Stephen Crane (a.k.a. Steve Crane, Steven Crane) started out as bit actor in Hollywood in the 30's and became better known for being one of Lana Turner's ex-husbands than for any of his roles. Realizing his limited acting skills, Steve Crane turned his charm and energies to the restaurant business and in 1953 bought out 'The Tropics' in Beverly Hills. Taking his cue from Trader Vic's and Don the Beachcomber, Steve created his own Polynesian themed restaurant 'The Luau'. The restaurant quickly became a hit and a 'must see' Hollywood celebrity hot spot. Eventually Steve Crane would be approached by Sheraton to create a Polynesian themed restaurant for the hotels to compete with Hilton and their association with Trader Vic's.
