Shoreline Tapestries

This is an image of a world we rarely closely examine; the world of lichens and barnacles. This and the following images have all been taken during a walk along one of the shorelines along the Oregon coast. Lichens are composites organism that arise from algae or cyanobacteria (or both) living among filaments of a fungus in a symbiotic relationship. They come in many different colors, sizes, and forms. They do not have roots that absorb water and nutrients as plants do, but like plants they produce their own food by photosynthesis using sunlight, carbon dioxide, water and minerals in their environment. Many a times in photography the saying "less is more" needs to be applied and understood. And often times simple images can be very difficult to compose and convey a message. This image is an example; showing simple dancing waves in the sunset along the shorelines of the Oregon coastline. All images are taken with a Canon 5D III (full frame) and a Canon 7D II (crop frame) using a variety of Canon L-Series lenses, and Tamron and Sigma pro-line lenses; processed in RAW with ACR, PSC, Photomatix, and a variety of other imaging software. Contrary to the wonderful name of this beautiful shoreline bird... the Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) - doesn't do oysters! Oysters are not their catch at all... but rather they eat 'mussels and cockles' from the coast and worms inland. In the late 18th/early 19th century the term oystercatcher started to come into use in Britain from America. There, it was applied to the closely related American species of oystercatcher, which ate bivalves known as 'coon-oysters'.
