These striking deep blue berries on bright red stocks, caught my attention while out hiking. It was a wet November day while I was out walking. The contrast of the bright colours among the seasonal brown vegetation is part of the joy of outdoor discoveries. There is always something new! This is alternate-leaf dogwood, (Comus alternifolia). Native to eastern North America, found along moist woods and stream banks in the Northeastern US and Canada. Alternate-leaf dogwood berries are a favourite food of summer songbirds and ruffed grouse. This is the third sighting I have had of this lovely but elusive songbird in the yard, but this is the only time I have seen it out in the open, perfectly and calmly posed on the pyracantha coccinea (Scarlet Firethorn), whose reddish-orange berries are a big hit with the usual repertoire of wintering birds in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The warm yellow background--courtesy of the leaves of the neighbor's weeping alder--adds a golden, autumn-y touch to this image! Prickly Tea Tree (Leptospermum Continentale) is one of the very few Tea Trees which grow inland - most of them are coastal. This one likes open woodlands and heath. The pink flowers along the stems make a pretty picture in Spring.

Hairpin Banksias (Banksia Spinulosa) are not common in Victoria, Australia - I think they prefer a warmer climate! I found this one in a patch of native bush in Healesville Sanctuary.

Forsythias are early bloomers and their vivid yellow flowers make and ideal border shrub in yor spring garden.
