Time Lord Tapestries

Peter Capaldi’s first episode as the Doctor was funny, tense, and very different from previous Doctors. This scene stuck out to me, so I painted it immediately afterwards. The texture of the scene. The gravity of two men unsure of their identity...unsure of who was the monster.

I have been a fan of Doctor who since the 70s. Over the past few years i have done a series of Paintings from Space and time to pop art splat. This is part of the Pop Art series which is based on the swirl of the time vortex. The original painting that these images come from are much bigger and in a Wide screen style. To use these for T shirts etc I have cropped the design and modified them from my original paintings.

One of the running themes in Doctor Who is the tendency to write in little moments that represent the actors' real personality. With David Tennant, they gave him an episode in Scotland so that he could speak with his real accent. With Matt Smith, they gave him a scene where he schooled everyone in a game of soccer, as Smith was nearly a professional footballer. Peter Capaldi used to play guitar and sing in a punk band back in the late 70s or early 80s. Hence, this awesome scene.

New faces, new worlds, new times

This is based on a promo picture for the ‘Listen’ episode in Series 8. This was one of my favorite episodes. As someone with a long history of sleep walking and talking to strange shadows in my sleep, this episode really freaked me out. It also set the foundation of the Doctor’s ‘no weapon’ approach to saving the universe, not to mention, we got our first glimpse of the Doctor as a scared child on Gallifrey. This is one of my biggest paintings. I wanted a painting that looked into the Tardis. Initially, I wanted the Doctor to have his hand out-stretched, beckoning me to join him. But I wondered too much if I was worthy of such adventures. I have struggled with social anxieties a lot and have found it too easy to retreat into myself (and into shows like this). So instead, I had the Doctor look as though he was considering me - Are you ready to follow the Mad Man in the box? Are you willing to conquer the real world? Some day.
