Watercolour and Ink on 140 lb. hot press paper We visited Staithes last month and I went crazy taking all kinds of photos. I so enjoy my visits to this coastal village in North Yorkshire. I painted this view using only created blacks and grays and leaving the white of the paper for area of white. Wildflowers are so joyful and sing of the current season. This watercolour is an attempt to capture that song.

Mountains in watercolour

Yesterday morning I joined Gwen's class for painting "en plein air" as the French say. There is nothing like this experience. This is only the third time I've actually painted in the open air, just to explain why this looks more amateur than some of my other work. In spite of it's flaws, I was still happy with this spontaneous sketch. I used pen and watercolour wash, and I think I like that combination and plan to use it more often. Update (March 20th, 2011): I entered this in the Qenos art show, which is an annual competition held by Hobson's Bay Arts Society. It won 1st prize in watercolour, and also sold. Well, goes to show you, that a little painting, done in just a short time can still kick ass, lol. :)

I'm totally uninspired as to what to call this - any suggestions. I painted this when painting with friends and just wanted to do something fun. I didn't think it would turn out to be something totally different. This is just a small painting in watercolour on 1/8 th of a sheet of Arches 300 gsm watercolour paper. I used glazing and masking fluid. Instead of the usual round brush I used my square brushes this time. Hope you like. : )

Watercolour on 140 lb. Arches cold press. I started this painting by laying down a piece of cheesecloth (gauze), and painting with fairly bright, denser pigment than I would normally use. When dry, I removed the cheesecloth, and tried to see what shapes and patterns suggested to me. The colours were still darker than I would have liked, but I dove in with a floral painted using the negative painting method. I found I had to go darker in the background than I normally would to allow the flowers to come forward. This challenged me to show a larger area and more flowers growing in wild abandon as though their seeds had been dropped from heaven. This is a farm we often pass on Heart Lake Road, near Mayfield during our drive from Toronto to Collingwood to visit with friends. This section of buildings was right beside the Bumblewick Tea Rooms. I know they are found in Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby both of which we visited that day. I am not quite certain which area the photo depicts, however. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. The dandelion represents courage, strength and resilience. It returns every year, sets down roots, grows and produces seeds. One cannot help but admire its persistence, and perhaps also its beauty.

Succulent ll - watercolour on 1/4 sheet Arches watercolour paper 300 gsm. I painted this for entry into the Paint the Gardens art show in Williamstown Botanic Gardens. Last year I entered a painting of a succulent, and sold it. This year I entered this one. I'm happy to say it sold also. Originally I was going to crop it much closer, having a frame already , which would have cropped out a lot of the background. My husband thought it would be a shame to crop lout the lovely effects from the salt. Glad I listened .
