Ukraine 1991 Tapestry

During most of the 20th century, Ukraine was referred to in the English-speaking world as The Ukraine, but since the country's independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the use of this term has become rarer, and style guides advise against its use. According to U.S. ambassador William Taylor, "the Ukraine" implies disregard for the country's sovereignty. The official Ukrainian position is that the usage of "the Ukraine" is incorrect, both grammatically and politically. Ukraine doesn't have an official motto, though "Glory to Ukraine, Glory to Heroes" is accepted as one and commonly a used by government, military, and civilians.
