Before Mme. Ocelot was Mme. Ocelot and the Cirque des Chats was the phenomenon it came to be, Mme. Ocelot was Paloma Preston, graduate student and daughter of a prominent family aghast at her desire to eschew coming out balls and society teas for field work in the wildest regions of sub-Saharan Africa. Her passion for studying big cats could not be quelled, however, and when her family threatened to disown her in a last ditch effort to change her mind, she decamped for Sudan with scarcely a backward glance. Paloma spent many happy years crouched in the thick vegetation of the wildest places on earth, scribbling in her field notebook and publishing papers about the avocations and antics of giant cats.
