The Green Goddess was the colloquial name for the Bedford RLHZ Self Propelled Pump, a fire fighting appliance used by the Auxiliary Fire Service and by the British Armed Forces during the 1950s and 1960s. The Auxiliary Fire Service was first formed in 1938 as part of Civil Defence Air raid precautions. Manned by volunteers, its role was to supplement the work of fire brigades at a local level. Later, in the 1950s, the threat of nuclear attack on Great Britain led to the production of about 1000 of these vehicles for use by the AFS.
