The Steelyard from which the pub derives its name is basically a weighing machine which would have been housed in the wooden structure attached to the top right of the building. In the 17th century, the Steelyard would have been used to weigh carts in order to enforce the Road Traffic Act of the time, which stated that carts with loads greater than 2.5 tons had to pay a toll.
