The earliest instance of "Join the Army; travel to exotic, distant lands; meet exciting, unusual people and kill them" that we could find is from a 1971 recruiting flyer that had been preserved in the Library of Congress. Variations of it have made their way into several war movies over the years, and it remains a popular phrase worn by vets by way of patches and t-shirts to this very day. Somewhat ironically, the same phrase was utilized by antiwar protestors during the Vietnam War.
