The 1979 NCAA Division I basketball tournament involved 40 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 9 and ended with the championship game on March 26 in Salt Lake City. Michigan State, led by Magic Johnson, won the national title with a 75–64 victory in the final game over Indiana State, led by Larry Bird. Indiana State came into the game undefeated, but couldn't extend their winning streak. Magic Johnson was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Both players were drafted into the NBA and played in the next fall.
