On the 28th of April 1926, the Leyland Special motor car 'BABS', driven by motoring legend, Welshman John Godfrey Parry-Thomas captured the world land speed record, reaching 170 mph on Pendine Sands, Carmarthenshire, South Wales. The record stood for almost a year until Sir Michael Campbell's ‘Bluebird’ achieved 174 mph in 1927. In a further attempt at breaking the record later that year, Parry-Thomas and BABS were involved in a fatal accident.
