orth Carolina patriot, Elizabeth Maxwell Steele, ran a tavern in Salisbury and was an ardent Whig patriot. On the morning of February 2nd, 1781, General Nathanael Greene stopped in the tavern after riding hard all night. He was weary and had just learned of the death of General William Davidson. Elizabeth gave him breakfast and then gave General Greene two bags of gold and silver that she had been saving. She told him, “take these, General, you need them and I can do without them.”
