Castle Pillows

After working on a few test shot long exposures, which didn't really appeal... as I walked away and panned around as I almost always do - to see if there's anything I've missed, I noticed this landscape and so switched out lens to a 35-135 Carl Zeiss Jena lens and shot this, manual exposure, at distal focal length. The nice s shape of the algal surf line added a nice line of convergence or drawing in... and the bright grassy turf of the coastal bank brings the eye up to the grandiose stately Castle of Penrhyn.

Thinking about the works and looking back at techniques of old masters ~ those that excelled in Black and White and wanting to replicate using modern full frame 35mm DSLR technology - I created this 'olde worldy' piece... of Dolbadarn Castle from across the lake. The almost completely obsolete technique of photo format single lens reflex camera work conducted by the masters is very seldom implemented now ~ due to the advent of the much simpler and quicker digital single lens reflex cameras... Yet, it is often nice to reflect and try to emulate some of the techniques which were so diligently adhered to by those masters of the past... Taken with 35mm format full frame A7 SONY ~ modern camera.

With so much rain the grassy lands of snowdonia looked so lush and green ~ that I wanted to capture a colour setting of Dolbadarn Castle and the spirit of Dolbadarn in summer. I stacked neutral density filters to achieve a wispy cloud like movement across the mountains and a lengthy exposure to develop the light over time and exposure... The wispiness of the cloud emanating from the castle, which I actually liked, to me added to the capture - as 'the spirit of Dolbadarn'.

The sea and the sun were just so smouldery tonight that at last light I just felt like I had to get out there and be creative... so this is the product of my evening...

After some consideration I've decided to include this in my RB portfolio... Understanding technologies well and what cameras and ancillary equipment should be able to do - I decided to take this image with a good quality lens and full frame format camera but using a cheap variable graduated filter from ebay. I've included it as I will make the comparison when I have further funds to be able to purchase same filter but by a reputable brand. Further to this it would be interesting to see how improvements could be made with advancements in processor technology of further models within the brand of camera I use and full frame format Pentax... but I will have to win the lottery to consider this! o.O :D Alternatively - make a sale on...

The Great Hall inside the castle is 20 metres by 8 metres , and 12 metres high to its timber roof, again a 19th-century replacement.The hall has no fireplace, and was presumably heated by a central fire, and ventilated by means of a louvre like the one in the modern roof. No details of the original roof construction are known, however, and the restoration is conjectural.Large windows light the hall, and stairs lead down to the three cellars on ground level.

The Norman keep of Richmond's castle towering abouve the rooftops of the neighbouring buildings. The castle is in the centre of the town of Richmond in North Yorkshire and dominates its surroundings. Constructed by Alan Rufus, a Norman, in 1071, the castle was intended as a defence against insurrection in the North. This 100 foot high keep was added in the C12th by Duke Conan of Brittany. The castle was apparently derelict by 1540 but was repaired in the 1800s due to the rise in tourism. Nikon D7100 Nikkor 18-200
