The American Football Association was a minor league football league from 1977 to 1983 with teams primarily in the southeastern United States. The Arkansas Champs, playing home games at University of Central Arkansas stadium, lasted one season in the league. The Champs had a record of 2-14, losing 11 straight games to end the season.

Defunct Oakland Invaders Football

The St. Louis Gunners were an independent professional football team based in St. Louis, Missouri, that played the last three games of the 1934 National Football League season, replacing the Cincinnati Reds on the league schedule after the Reds' league membership was suspended. They won their first game against the Pittsburgh Pirates (now Steelers) 6–0, and lost the last two to the Detroit Lions (40–7) and the Green Bay Packers (21–14). Six of the Reds players joined the team for the last two games. The team was headquartered at the St. Louis National Guard Armory, which accounts for its nickname the 'Gunners'.

The Sacramento Attack was an Arena Football League team that debuted in the league in 1992 and played a single season. The Attack were originally going to be named the L.A. Wings, but shortly before the 1992 season started L.A. was scrapped and the team was shipped to Sacramento. After one season the team was moved to Miami, Florida, to form the Miami Hooters. The franchise's AFL tenure ended in Sunrise, Florida, where the Florida Bobcats played from 1996 to 2001, folding after the latter year.

The 2009 California Redwoods season was the first and only season for the California Redwoods. In the United Football League's Premiere Season, the team finished with a 2–4 record and in third place. This team is now known as the Sacramento Mountain Lions.

In 1977 members of the San Antonia Amateur Football League began work on creating a new minor league football league, they called it the American Football Association. Teams in the league changed constantly. The Tulsa Mustangs were the first of several Oklahoma teams in the league and played only in the 1979 season.

The West Virginia Rockets were a member of the short-lived American Football Association, a league formed in 1977 and lasted until 1983. The Rockets began playing in the league in 1980 and won the championship that year and the following year. The team then changed the name to the Charleston Rockets and played a few more seasons until the league folded following the 1983 season.

Tampa Bay Mutiny was a professional soccer team based in Tampa, Florida. They were a charter member of Major League Soccer (MLS) and played from 1996 to 2001. They played their home games at Tampa Stadium and then at Raymond James Stadium. The Mutiny were established in 1994 and were owned and operated by MLS throughout their existence. They were successful in their first years of play, winning the first MLS Supporters' Shield behind MLS MVP Carlos Valderrama and high-scoring forward Roy Lassiter, whose 27 goals in 1996 remained the MLS single-season record until 2018.

The Philadelphia Bell was a franchise in the World Football League, which operated in 1974 and a portion of a season in 1975. The Bell played their home games in 1974 at JFK Stadium in South Philadelphia.

The franchise was a novelty team put together by Walter Lingo to market his Oorang (Airedale Terrier) dog kennels. Of the 20 games they played over two seasons, only one was played at "home" in nearby Marion. With a population well under a thousand people, LaRue remains the smallest town ever to have been the home of an NFL franchise, or probably any professional team in any league in the United States.

The Miami Hooters were the first Arena Football League team in Miami, played their games at Miami Arena. They eventually moved to Palm Beach and became the Florida Bobcats.

The Los Angeles Buccaneers were a traveling team in the National Football League during the 1926 season, ostensibly representing the city of Los Angeles, California. Like the Los Angeles Wildcats of the first American Football League, the team never actually played a league game in Los Angeles. It was operated out of Chicago with players from California colleges.

The Cleveland Tigers were the first Cleveland team franchise in what became the National Football League (NFL). The Tigers played in the "Ohio League" before joining the American Professional Football Association (later renamed the National Football League in 1922) during the 1920 and 1921 seasons.

The 1981 Chicago Fire were a pro football outfit that competed in the summer-season American Football Association. The club was a brand re-boot of the old Chicago Fire of the World Football League, resuscitating that team’s name, logo and helmet design.

The DuPage Eagles were a strong semi-pro football team that played in Northeastern Illinois from the mid-1980’s through the mid-1990’s. The team was known as the Glen Ellyn Eagles from 1984 to 1986 before switching to “DuPage” in 1987, adopting the name of the county where the team practiced. Eagles players were not paid to play for the team and, in fact, paid a $100 fee to join the team, plus providing their own equipment and travel expenses.1 The term “semi-pro” in football has covered a wide-spectrum of financial arrangements through the years. But by the mid-1980’s “semi-pro” had essentially come to be synonymous with the term “amateur”, in that virtually no one was drawing any sort of paychecks.

The Detroit Wheels were an American football team, a charter member of the defunct World Football League. Soon after Gary Davidson announced the WFL's formation in October 1973, he was approached by a man named Bud Hucul about putting a team in Detroit. In a harbinger of things to come, however, it emerged that Hucul had a long history of legal problems, including 30 arrests and 27 lawsuits. A more credible offer came from a consortium of ten Detroit-area investors who were formally awarded a franchise on December 13, 1973. The group would eventually expand to 33 people, including singer Marvin Gaye, Motown Records vice-president Esther Gordy Edwards, Milford Fabricating owner Edward Nishon, and Little Caesars founder Mike Ilitch.

The Minneapolis Marines were an early professional football team that existed from 1905 until 1924. The team was later resurrected from 1929 to 1930 under the Minneapolis Red Jackets name. The Marines were owned locally by Minneapolitans John Dunn and Val Ness, and composed primarily of working-class teenagers. Some of the first games were played at Camden Park, The Parade, and Bottineau Field. Later games were played at larger stadiums such as Nicollet Park and Lexington Park. The Minneapolis Marines are the first Minnesota-based team to join the National Football League, predating the Duluth Eskimos (1923) and Minnesota Vikings (1961).

The Boston Yanks were a National Football League team based in Boston, Massachusetts, that played from 1944 to 1948. The team played its home games at Fenway Park. Any games that conflicted with the Boston Red Sox baseball schedule in the American League were held at Braves Field of the cross-town National League team, the Boston Braves. Team owner Ted Collins, who managed singer and television show host Kate Smith (1907–1986) for thirty years, picked the name Yanks because he originally wanted to run a team that played at New York City's old Yankee Stadium. The Yanks managed only a 2–8 record during their first regular season.

The Hammond Pros were an American football team from Hammond, Indiana that played in the National Football League from 1920 to 1926 as a traveling team.

Buffalo, New York had a turbulent, early-era National Football League team that operated under multiple names and several different owners between the 1910s and 1920s. The early NFL-era franchise was variously called the Buffalo All-Stars from 1915 to 1917, Buffalo Niagaras in 1918, the Buffalo Prospects in 1919, Buffalo All-Americans from 1920 to 1923, Buffalo Bisons from 1924 to 1925 and in 1927 and 1929, and the Buffalo Rangers in 1926. The franchise, which was experiencing financial problems in 1928, did not participate in league play that season.

The Football Association of Yugoslavia was the governing body of football in Yugoslavia, based in Belgrade, with a major administrative branch in Zagreb. It organized the Yugoslav First League, the Yugoslavia national football team, and the Second Leagues of all six former Yugoslav republics.
