A few weeks ago I was watching a series called "For All Mankind" with some friends. It was an alternative history of the space race -- highly recommended if you haven't watched it yet -- and reminded me a lot of a book I read last year called "The Calculating Stars" -- again, highly recommended. Anyway, one thing led to another, and I started doodling what would SpaceX's logo would look like if it had evolved from NASA's original logos from back in the 60s and 70s, and then I made this version, which is based on the NASA logo from the 1980s and the space shuttle program. Hope you like it!

This was the ship we cruised Antarctica in, the mv Discovery. It was resting in Paradise Bay ( no anchor, as it had to move to avoid the larger icebergs !). A lovely looking ship, not too big, it featured in the tv series "The Love Boat" many years ago ! I painted Discovery because of its historic significance to Scott of The Antarctic, It shows Discovery on the banks of The River Thames, London, with St Pauls Cathedral and Blackfriers Bridge in the background. It's sunrise and the sky is yellow turning to blue on a summers day. The plain trees on the Embankment are in full bloom. About the history of the ship Discovery. Purchased by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1905 and converted for use as a merchant. Laid up from 1912 - 1915 during WWI. From 1915 - 1920 traded under charter in European waters from Archangel in Arctic Russia to the Black Sea. She was loaned in 1916 to the British Government to rescue Shackleton's party marooned on Elephant Island, but they were rescued before she ar...

This is called "discovery of Butterflies" features a mama cat showing her two little ones a butterfly that has handed on her paw, they look on in joyful wonder even as two smaller butterflies have landed upon them. It's a lovely picture of innocent wonder and joy in discovering the beauty around us, sharing it with one another.
