Flying Tigers Pillows

The First American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Republic of China Air Force, nicknamed the Flying Tigers, was formed to help oppose the Japanese invasion of China. Operating 1941–1942, it was composed of pilots from the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC), Navy (USN), and Marine Corps (USMC), and was commanded by Claire Lee Chennault. Their Curtis P-40B Warhawk aircraft, marked with Chinese colors, flew under American control. Recruited under President Franklin Roosevelt’s authority before Pearl Harbor, their mission was to bomb Japan and defend the Republic of China, but many delays meant the AVG first flew in combat after the US and Japan declared war.

Flying Tiger Line, also known as Flying Tigers, was the first scheduled cargo airline in the United States and a major military charter operator during the Cold War era for both cargo and personnel (the latter with leased aircraft). The company was started by Robert William Prescott on the grounds of Los Angeles International Airport in Westchester, Los Angeles, California. The airline was named after the Flying Tigers fighter unit of World War II, officially the 1st American Volunteer Group. Ten former AVG pilots, after returning to the United States in 1945, formed the Flying Tiger Line established in June 1945 as National Freight Service using a small fleet of 14 Budd Conestoga freighters purchased as war surplus.

The P-40 Warhawk is a legendary WWII Fighter Plane. It first flew in 1938, and saw combat from 1941 onwards. Famous for its Shark Mouth Nose Art, the P-40 excelled as an air superiority aircraft. This design features a P-40N named 'Boss's Hoss', flown by Flying Tigers & AVG Ace Lt Col W.N. Reed.
