The 1st Infantry Division is a combined arms division of the United States Army, and is the oldest continuously serving in the Regular Army. It has seen continuous service since its organization in 1917 during World War I. It was officially nicknamed "The Big Red One" (abbreviated "BRO") after its shoulder patch and is also nicknamed "The Fighting First". However, the division has also received troop monikers of "The Big Dead One" and "The Bloody First" as puns on the respective officially sanctioned nicknames. It is currently based at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Starting in 1962, the 1st Battalion, 58th Infantry served with the 197th Infantry Brigade at Fort Benning, while the separate Companies D, E, and F served for varying periods in Vietnam, from 1966 to 1972, under the 93d MP Battalion, the 4th Infantry Division, and the 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), respectively. Company D served as a rifle security company while Companies E and F performed long range reconnaissance missions and were later redesignated as ranger companies of the 75th Infantry.

The 8th Infantry Regiment of the United States, also known as the "Fighting Eagles,"[1] is an infantry regiment in the United States Army. The 8th Infantry participated in the Mexican War, American Civil War, Philippine Insurrection, Moro Rebellion, World War I, World War II, Vietnam War and Iraq Campaign.

The 27th Infantry Regiment, nicknamed the "Wolfhounds", is a unit of the United States Army established in 1901, that served in the Philippine–American War, in the Siberian Intervention after World War I, and as part of the 25th Infantry Division ("Tropic Lightning") during World War II, the Korean War, and later the Vietnam War. More recently the regiment deployed to Afghanistan for the second time, following two deployments to Iraq. The regimental march is the Wolfhound March.

The 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment (507th PIR), now the 507th Infantry Regiment, was an airborne infantry regiment of the United States Army. The regiment was initially assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division in World War II before transferring to the 17th Airborne Division. Now 1st Battalion, 507th Infantry Regiment is part of the United States Army Infantry School, subordinate to its Airborne and Ranger Training Brigade,[1] responsible for the Army's Basic Airborne School, Jumpmaster School, Pathfinder School, and the "Silver Wings" Command Exhibition Parachute Team.

During the latter part of August, 1918, some five thousand men and nearly one hundred officers were transferred from the 8th Division to the American Expeditionary Force in Siberia with Major-General William S. Graves. Major-General Eli A. Helmick then took command of the division which was filled up with recruits and on October 18, 1918, the division started to move to Camp Mills, Long Island. The 8th Division started to embark from Hoboken, October 30th. The 8th Artillery Brigade, including the 2nd, 81st and 83rd Field Artillery regiments: 8th Trench Mortar Battery; 16th Infantry Brigade headquarters and the 8th Infantry with division HQ.

On 1 April 1975 it was redesignated as the 2d Battalion, 58th Infantry, assigned to the 2d Armored Division, and activated at Fort Hood, Texas, then inactivated again on 31 May 1981 at Fort Hood, Texas, and relieved from assignment to the 2d Armored Division. Its Headquarters transferred on 28 August 1987 to the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command and activated at Fort Benning, Georgia, as a training unit as the 4th Battalion, 2d Infantry Training Brigade) On 1 October 2005 it was redesignated as the 2d Battalion, 58th Infantry Regiment. The battalion is tasked to provide trained and ready soldiers for the Army as part of the 198th Infantry Brigade.

Stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, the 2nd Battalion, 3rd US Infantry Regiment, serves as one of three infantry battalions of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Infantry Division ('Indian Head'). After a 31-year hiatus from service, the 2nd Battalion was reactivated on 15 March 2001 as part of the US Army's first Stryker brigade (inactive) combat team. It served as part of the first deployment of a Stryker brigade combat team in 2003. It then served a 15-month deployment in 2006–2007. It deployed to Iraq again in 2009 and Afghanistan in 2011.

1st Infantry Division was sent to Vietnam Jul 1965, The division was forced to leave its assigned tank battalions behind, and its mechanized infantry battalions were reorganized as infantry. Two battalions were reorganized as mechanized while the division was in Vietnam. The division served in the III CTZ, with headquarters at Bien Hoa (Oct 1965 – Jan 966), Di An (Feb 1966 – Jan 1967), Di An and Lai Khe (Feb – Sep 1967), Lai Khe (Oct 1967 – Oct 1969) and Di An again (Nov 1969 – Apr 1970). The division left Vietnam in Apr 1970.

The 193rd Glider Infantry Regiment was an airborne infantry regiment of the United States Army during World War II. It was part of the 17th Airborne Division and fought during the Battle of the Bulge.

The 2nd Ranger Infantry Company (Airborne) was a Ranger light infantry company of the United States Army active during the Korean War. As a small special operations unit, it specialized in irregular warfare. A segregated unit, all of its personnel, including its officers, were African-Americans.

In 1965, the 1st and 2nd Battalions were deployed to South Vietnam with the 1st Infantry Division. 2nd Battalion were badly mauled during the Battle of Ong Thanh in October 1967. Early 1970 saw the end of the participation of the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 28th Infantry in this war.
