The koala gets its name from an ancient Aboriginal word meaning “no drink” because it receives over 90% of its hydration from the Eucalyptus leaves (also known as gum leaves) it eats, and only drinks when ill or times when there is not enough moisture in the leaves. The koala is found in coastal areas of the mainland’s eastern and southern regions, inhabiting Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. The koala gets its name from an ancient Aboriginal word meaning “no drink” however koalas are drinking much more water than they used to—and it’s likely because of increasingly hot, dry weather. My family and I came across this koala when going for a walk. He looked as if he was smiling at us. I took a photo and later decided to paint him. As I painted this Australian marsupial, I realized how amazingly beautiful this animal is and how we need to protect them from many dangers that they face today.
