Sunset at Lake Mungo. As the sun drops very low in the west the light is subtly reflected onto the lunette, made up of sand dunes and eroded pinnacles known as The Walls of China which is on the eastern shore of the ancient lake. Lake Mungo National Park is a part of the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area, a chain of dried out lakes that were once strung between Willandra Creek and the main channel of the Lachlan River in Outback NSW. The Pinnacles, Handfast Point Number of views as of 9th October 2016 = 430. A return to one of my favourite locations on Dorset's 'Jurassic Coast'. Just east of the village of Studland and on the coast path between the towns of Swanage and Poole, the Pinnacles are two chalk formations, in the English Channel just off Ballard Down and Handfast Point. They have been gradually eroded by the sea to form caves, then rock arches, which have subsequently collapsed leaving the stacks/stumps we see today. The Pinnacles and Peveril Point Number of views as of 27th November 2016 = 540. This shot, looking south across Swanage Bay to Peveril Point shows the southern most of the two Pinnacles, two chalk formations on Dorset's 'Jurassic' coast (southern England). The Pinnacles have been gradually eroded by the sea to form caves, then rock arches, which have subsequently collapsed leaving the stacks/stumps we see today. The Jurassic Coast stretches 96 miles from Handfast Point near Studland, down to Exmouth in Devon, and comprises Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous rock formations spanning approximately 185 million years of the Earth's history. A small section of the unique pillar-like formations that are seen throughout Zhangjiajie National Park. Zhangjiajie National Park, Hunan Province, China. Canon 5D MkIII. Although resembling karst terrain, this area is not underlain by limestones and is not the product of chemical dissolution, which is characteristic of limestone karst. They are the result of many years of physical, rather than chemical, erosion. Much of the weathering which forms these pillars are the result of expanding ice in the winter and the plants which grow on them. Hot air balloons and the landscape catching the rising sun as it enters the Valley of Love, so called due to its phallic shaped Fairy Chimneys or pinnacles. Goreme Valley, Cappadocia, Turkey, Asia Minor. The pinnacles are the result of erosion of volcanic deposits that occurred thousands of years ago. The softer material is eroded more quickly and the harder tufa remains in many shapes. Where the tops are made of a hard rock, the pillars seem to have hats on top. Canon 500D, zoom lens. A view of some of the amazing rock formations in the National Park at Goreme in Cappadocia, Turkey. These natural pinnacles of volcanic rock have been shaped by erosion alone. Among these are carved stone dwellings and tunnels which were created many centuries ago - as a means of escape from marauding invaders. Also carved into the rock are ancient churches complete with frescoes.

Badlands National Park is located in southwestern South Dakota, featuring nearly 400 square miles of sharply eroded buttes and pinnacles, and the largest undisturbed grass prairie in the United States.

It is 1.7 miles from the junction of US Highway 163 and Monument Valley Tribal Park Road, to the Entrance Station of Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. At times traffic can flow slowly, as the herd of motor homes and cars in front of you lumber up, one at a time, to pay their entrance fee. The eye wanders, as you wait, because the west end of that eastbound Winnebago in front of you is just not that picturesque. What catches your eye is this, the view out your left side window, of mesas, buttes and pinnacles with names like Stagecoach, Big Chief, and Eagle, among others. This scene is just a taste of what you're waiting to see, making that wait seem just a little too long.
