Looking across the River Thames from the Thames Path in Buckinghamshire to the parish church of All Saints at Bisham in Berkshire. The church dates from the 12th century, the squat Norman tower being built around 1175. The buildings were extended over the following years, particularly by the Hoby family who lived in nearby Bisham Abbey. A narrowboat moored on the banks of the Thames at Lechlade in Gloucestershire on an overcast afternoon, close to the Oxfordshire border and right at the southernmost tip of the Cotswolds. Here we are also at the highest navigable point of the river - St John'sLlock just below this scene being the first (or last) to navigate. Just further upstream the river becomes narrower and shallower - the river looking very little like the mighty Thames flowing through London!

A narrow boat moored just upstream from the medieval bridge over the Thames at Wallingford in Oxfordshire, England. There has been a bridge here at least since medieval times, the first mention being in 1141 when King Stephen besieged Wallingford Castle. The present bridge, dating largely from the 18thC is thought to contain 13thC brickwork within its 22 arches. It spans the Thames linking Wallingford with the village of Crowmarsh Gifford on the opposite bank.

Looking across the River Thames at Wallingford in Oxfordshire, England towards the town. This bridge links Wallingford with Crowmarsh Gifford. A bridge was first mentioned in 1141 when King Stephen besieged the castle. However, the first stone bridge was built slightly later and there are apparently elements of this medieval structure in the bridge we see now! Across the river we can see the spire of St Peter's Church dating from 1776-7, a local landmark. This image captured on an autumn afternoon.

Boats moored at the landing stage at Ray Mill Island on the River Thames in Maidenhead on a summer's day. Behind us is the busy and historic Boulters Lock. Ray Mill Island is named after the Ray family who once owned the flour mill just behind where we are standing. The mill stopped producing flour in the 1920s and is now a restaurant. My original photograph has been edited as a coloured pencil drawing.

Just upstream from Caversham Bridge, swans regularly gather in the hope of food - which is always forthcoming! The bridge spans the River Thames linking Reading and Caversham. The first bridge here was built c1163. During the Civil War a skirmish on the bridge resulted in the Reading side being rebuilt with a wooden drawbridge. This was later painted on canvas by JMW Turner. The present bridge dates from 1926. Swans and geese are a feature here as they gather by the Reading Rowing Club boathouse

A picturesque corner of Abingdon in Oxfordshire below the abbey mill on the River Thames, On the left are the remaining abbey buildings with the medieval chimney of the Checker Hall. The abbey was supposedly founded in about 675 and later continued as a Benedictine House until it was surrendered to the Crown in 1538 by its last Abbot, Thomas Pentecost,

I painted many scenes of Wapping in London, but was always reluctant to do drawing unless asked to for a commission. Here is one of my rare drawings.

The view of the River Thames looking downstream from Halfpenny Bridge in Lechlade, Gloucestershire. This is the highest navigable point on the river as just a little further upstream it becomes narrower and shallower. Here though, boats are moored by the meadows where cattle graze while swans preen and wait for handouts of food! Lechlade is an attractive market town at the southern tip of the Cotswolds close to the Gloucestershre and Oxfordshire border.

Evening sunlight on County Hall. This is the building behind London Eye. The main riverside building contains the Sea Life London Aquarium, London Dungeon, the London Film Museum and Namco Funscape tourist attractions, as well as Premier Inn and London Marriott hotels.

A pleasure boat taking its passengers along the River Thames passing the parish church at Bisham in Berkshire, England. The 12th century parish church of All Saints at Bisham stands on the banks of the Thames and is next door to Bisham Abbey, the national Sports Centre. Unsurprisingly, racing boat crews can often be seen training on the Thames here. The pleasure boat has probably come from the Buckinghamshire town of Marlow on Thames just downstream.

This is about as far as you can take a boat upriver on the Thames. This is Lechlade - and beyond here the river becomes narrower and shallower. In the distance is the round house marking the start of the sadly derelict Thames and Severn Canal (currently being restored). Lechlade itself is a picturesque market town in Gloucestershire near the border with Oxfordshire and boasts the first (or last) lock on the Thames - St John's.

More accurately, at that point, considering the many bends in the river, it is technically the West bank. A panoramic view of the North Bank of the River Thames as it runs through London, England, including the Palace of Westminster (the Houses of Parliament) and Westminster Bridge, taken from the Riverside Walk near the London Eye. The major riverside regeneration site, formerly a sweeteners refinery, is adjacent to the O2 Arena with 500 metres of Thames river frontage and plays a crucial part in the delivery of the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s masterplan proposals for the western side of the Greenwich Peninsula. Leading international architecture practice OMA are the masterplanner/lead architect on the mixed-use development and are developing their initial thoughts for the site

An artistic view of the bridge over the River Thames at Clifton Hampden in Oxfordshire. This handsome bridge with its gothic arches was built in 1867 to replace a previous ferry service which had existed since medieval times. The architect was Sir George Gilbert Scott who also designed the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras. It was originally a toll bridge but this ended in 1946 when the local councils bought it from the private owners. This view is from the Thames Path national trail.

This peaceful backwater is immediately next to the rushing waters of Benson weir on the River Thames in Oxfordshire. This was photographed in late August and the lush green foliage rather belies the hot, dry weather we had experienced durung the summer! The image was taken from the Thames Path which, if coming from Wallingford, has just passed over the lock and weir at Benson. Carrying on to the left we reach a riverside cafe and bistro - just right for refreshments before the return walk!

A white painted house on the banks of the River Thames at Mill End, Hambleden in Buckinghamshire. This lovely stretch of the river is where the Chiltern Hills meet the Thames Valley and unsuprisingly is the setting for many TV programmes and a number of films. This image was captured from Hambledon Weir, the longest on the river. Nearby is the iconic Hambleden Mill, now luxury flats. A digital drawing from my original photograph.

The Dartford crossing of the River Thames

The 316 foot high Clock Tower is the world's largest four-faced, chiming clock. The structure completed between 1858-59 is situated at the north-eastern end of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London. It is often colloquially referred to as Big Ben, which is actually the nickname of the main bell housed within the tower (formally known as the Great Bell). The bell weighing over 13 tons, was cast in 1858 at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in East London. To this day one of the largest bells they have ever cast. The Whitechapel Bell Foundry also cast the Liberty Bell, along with hand bells, tower bells, clock bells, carillons, and turret bells for all over the world. An old Oxford college barge hiding in a backwater of the River Thames between Oxford and Iffley. A number of barges like this were bought by the Oxford colleges' rowing clubs in the mid 1800s as changing rooms and viewing platforms for spectators during races. They have now been sold off and can be occasionally found as floating function rooms etc. Club houses were built to replace them and can be found near Christ Church Meadows in Oxford.
