Associated Transport was formed during World War II when seven trucking companies joined forces despite the objections of the DOJ, who believed the merger to be anti-competitive. The merger saw Associated operating 3,500 power units over 24,000 miles of unduplicated routes from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, with 117 terminals, making them the largest trucking company in the world between 1943 and 1976. In 1976, Associated purchased Eastern Freightways in order to gain access to its equipment and routes, but also had taken on its debt. This turned out to be a bad decision, as Associated Transport couldn't manage Eastern's debt, sending the company into bankruptcy, ending a legacy of the world's largest trucking company.

In 1922, two friends formed a partnership to haul sand and gravel during the early Los Angeles boom. They started on credit, buying 15 dump trucks, but soon, the fleet grew to 26 units. In 1929, C&T added tankers to move petroleum. In 1936, they purchased Western which allowed them to move into dry freight, and then in 1956, purchasing Gillette Motor Freight had them changing names to Western Gillette Motor Freight and reaching Chicago and serving 1,400 cities in between. By the ’70s, the company had over 2,000 employees operating out of 52 company terminals in 15 States and a fleet of over 1,000 trucks. In 1976 the company was sold to Roadway, marking the end of Western Gillette, and C&T, as well as their signature 'sunshine service.'

California Motor Express (CME) trucking was founded in the early '30s in Los Angeles, California. As their name might imply, they served all of California and California only. With their primary route being I-5 between SoCal and NorCal, and serving major cities in between, CME really did 'carry California.'

Hussmann & Roper Freight Lines was founded in St. Louis, Missouri in 1927 as a general trucking interest. They were one of the first trucking companies to offer regular overnight service, eventually advertising themselves as 'the overnight, every night line.' Initially serving all of Missouri, and eventually all of the Midwest, by the time Hussmann & Roper was sold to a larger trucking company in 1963, they were operating multiple terminals and nationwide routes.

Carl J. Subler of Versailles, Ohio purchased his first truck in 1933 at the age of 18 and began hauling grain to Southeast Ohio and back hauling coal to Darke County. Carl would soon begin adding more trucks and hiring drivers to run them, and before he knew it, he was running a trucking company. Carl Subler Trucking wasn't formally incorporated until 1954, but would grow into the 10th largest truckload carrier in the U.S.A., operating in all lower 48 states with over 600 trucks. Carl Subler Trucking, Inc. ran well into the '80s until they were purchased by A-P-A Transport Corp. in 1986. A-P-A slowly rebranded the Subler fleet, and they themselves closed down in 2002.

Founded in 1930 with original authority between Denver, Colorado, and Chicago, Illinois, the aptly named Denver Chicago Trucking (DC) would grow to become the first coast-to-coast carrier in the nation. Real growth started in 1939 with the purchase of Denver-Los Angeles Trucking, which added routes to Los Angeles, San Diego, and Arizona. From their original 1931 A-5 International, the DC road fleet would grow to over 3,000 units wearing their once familiar DC green and yellow colors. By 1966 DC became one of the top 8 trucking companies in the U.S., with over 3,500 employees. In 1973 DC, along with LASME of Seattle, became part of the TIME System of Lubbock, TX.

B. F. Leaman and his son Clair began his trucking business with a single Pierce Arrow truck delivering lime and milk around Lancaster County, Pennsylvania back in 1913. By 1930, they were successful enough to purchase Mileage Motor Corporation, and began hauling fuel oil in addition to the lime and milk. In 1933, the Leaman Transportation Company was formed. In 1961, Leaman merged his two companies with Chemical Tank Lines, forming Chemical Leaman Tank Lines, Inc. Following the merger, the company had 31 terminals nationwide and approximately 1,300 bulk tankers. Leaman continued to expand through acquisition well into the '90s, and by 1998, had the industry’s largest tanker fleet and most expansive service.

In 1921, Harry Zabarsky and his brother, Mickey, started St. Johnsbury Trucking (SJT) with a single truck, and within a few years, had a growing fleet. Based in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, SJT grew to serve the northeastern U.S., and much of eastern Canada. The company grew and expanded heavily through acquisitions of trucking companies, operating terminals throughout Delaware, New England, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. The mid '80s saw fortunes turn for SJT in a post deregulation trucking industry, and by the end of the decade, it was clear the company was in trouble. After more than seven decades of business, St. Johnsbury Trucking officially closed its doors on June 14, 1993, leaving 4,400 hardworking people out of work.

Lee Way Motor Freight was founded by Robert “Whitt” Lee in 1934 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Lee Way grew quickly, adding drivers and equipment, all while developing a reputation for safety and reliability. By 1947, the company had 225 pieces of equipment and added routes in Kansas and Missouri. That year, the company acquired another trucking company that expanded its fleet and operating authority, an expansion strategy Lee Way would follow for decades into the future. By 1975, Lee's sons decided to sell the company and by the time deregulation hit, Lee Way was in a downward spiral. Lee Way had expanded to 5,000 employees and 100 terminals in 25 states by 1984,but Lee Way's then owner, Commercial Lovelace, elected to shutter the line.

In 1946, investment banker Scribner Birlenbach decided that he wanted to get into the trucking business. He began his venture by purchasing a Los Angeles trucking company with 15 tractors and 22 trailers, calling it Transcon Lines, with a plan to turn it into a major transcontinental carrier. By 1962, Transcon had over 1,100 units covering over 14,000 route miles. In three decades time, Transcon had purchased 27 trucking companies, including Kramer-Consolidated Freight Lines in 1978, which made them a true coast-to-coast carrier. Transcon's work force was 3,829 people strong with 5,700 pieces of equipment and 117 terminals in 38 states as of 1981, but as the '80s marched on, Transcon's fortunes began to turn.

Quadrel Brothers Trucking was founded by two brothers after returning from WWII. Based out of Rahway, New Jersey, Quadrel Brothers was a specialized tanker hauling company with both liquid and dry tankers that transported everything from fuel and chemicals, to potable water and foodstuffs, though probably not in the same tanker trailers.

C.B. McHaul was a line of 3" action figures and vehicles introduced in 1977, the name being a play on country musician C.W. McCall. Featuring a line of good guy and bad guy truckers, along with their respective 18-wheelers, the line played into America's fascination with C.B. radios and truck driving in the '70s. The trucks featured a built-in C.B. style microphone that allowed kids to speak into it and come out of the speaker in the cab. Sadly, the C.B. craze was a rather short-lived national phenomenon, and by the time the line hit the market, the fad was already on its way out. As a result, production ended early, making these really rare pieces for toy collectors to seek out.

Founded in 1968, Wichita Southeast Kansas Transit (WSKT) was a privately held trucking company that started as a certificated Kansas Intrastate Carrier, serving Wichita and Southeast Kansas with overnight freight service. WSKT grew their network to 46 terminals in a closed loop line haul configuration across fifteen states. WSKT offered LTL Interstate and Intrastate, Pool Distribution, and Time Definite Delivery services and continued their reputation of guaranteed overnight service up until the end when they were sold in 2005.

Founded in Holland, Michigan in 1929, Holland Freight spent decades serving the central United States. Long recognized for delivering the most next-day service lanes in its territory, Holland expanded into the Southeast, Midwest, and Canada's two easternmost provinces, bringing their on-time reliability to even more customers. From humble beginnings in a single truck driven by the owner, to more than 10,000 dedicated employees in the 2020s, Holland Freight was a regional success story in the LTL freight business.

Founded in 1923 in Janesville, Wisconsin as W.R. Arthur Co. to serve the massive Janesville auto plant, JATCO had five owners and transported millions of vehicles over hundreds of millions of miles. In 1960, Arthur sold the company to Edmund Brady, who renamed it Janesville Auto Transport Co., or JATCO, as it was commonly known.

Di Salvo Trucking Company got their start in the 1940s when Russ Di Salvo bought himself a used farm truck and began offering cartage services in and around San Francisco. Within ten years, Di Salvo added more trucks, hired drivers, and extended well beyond the Bay Area. By the 1960s, Di Salvo Trucking had a sizable fleet and was moving freight throughout California, and their red cab over semi trucks were a common sight up and down the I-5 corridor. Fast-forward to 2002, and Di Salvo Trucking Co. had finally reached the end of the road, where the line was shuttered and facilities and equipment sold off to other LTL haulers looking to expand into California.
