Hot air balloons from Cappadocia, Turkey.

Ortahisar (it means "medial castle") is one of the 2 natural rocky "castles" in the region of Cappadocia. The other one is Uchisar (it means "edge castle"). It's one of the most beautiful villages of the region, with very kind and hospitable inhabitants. They take life easy, time passes very slowly in Ortahisar.

The twin valleys of Soganli (Asagi Soganli & Yukari Soganli) are the southeast corner of the imaginary triangle that forms Cappadocia. Although in the southwest "edge" of Kayseri Prefecture, it's very close to the "borders" with Nevsehir Prefecture, not very far from the "heart" of Cappadocia (Central Anatolia, Turkey), but still far enough, for most of the tourists, so you will have the chance to explore the 2 valleys of Soganli, practically "alone". Inside the valleys, a researcher, called Anastasios Levidis, counted 360 rock-cut byzantine churches, not carved in the slopes of the valleys, but "inside" some rocky cones. Once upon a time Sinasos, nowadays called Mustafapasa, was sort of unofficial "capital" of the Greek population of Cappadocia. The Orthodox/Greeks that had been living for centuries in that region, where sent to Greece in 1923-24, being part of the exchange of populations between Turkey and Greece, according to the Treaty of Laussane. A flight with a balloon above the spectacular landscape of Cappadokia (Turkey) is considered a "must do" once you visit the region, and if you ask me, it really is. The whole thing, waking up in the middle of the night, watch the preparations of the baloon, and mostly, flying (the "main course") are an unforgetable experience. There are many companies arranging flights and if the weather allows it, you can see more than 30 baloons in the Cappadocian sky. The take off place varies and it depends on the wind direction. Hot air balloons and the landscape catching the rising sun as it enters the Valley of Love, so called due to its phallic shaped Fairy Chimneys or pinnacles. Goreme Valley, Cappadocia, Turkey, Asia Minor. The pinnacles are the result of erosion of volcanic deposits that occurred thousands of years ago. The softer material is eroded more quickly and the harder tufa remains in many shapes. Where the tops are made of a hard rock, the pillars seem to have hats on top. Canon 500D, zoom lens. A view of some of the amazing rock formations in the National Park at Goreme in Cappadocia, Turkey. These natural pinnacles of volcanic rock have been shaped by erosion alone. Among these are carved stone dwellings and tunnels which were created many centuries ago - as a means of escape from marauding invaders. Also carved into the rock are ancient churches complete with frescoes.

This is part of the path that leads to Selime monastery (Aksaray, Cappadocia, Turkey) , going up a steep hillside, that it's an atraction of its own! Here you see one of the many tunnels with carved stairs leading to the monastic complex. In the background, through the hole, you can see part of the fascade from one of the many rock cut cave-churches of the monastery. The region of Cappadocia is a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

The Ihlara Valley (Aksaray, Central Anatolia, Turkey), is on the southwest corner of the imaginary triangle that forms Cappadocia, but quite far from its "heart", which is around Goreme. That's why it's not so crowded as the other valleys of Cappadocia, although it's a place of extreme natural beauty, and great historical and cultural significance with dozes of impressive rock cut churches and monasteries..

*Best viewed in large format* This is the second of a few pieces I'll be uploading that were captured from a hot air balloon, drifting over Cappadocia, Turkey. A ride in one of these balloons has been on my 'things to do before I die' list for a long time. I really can't think of a better place to experience it than Cappadocia. The volcanic land forms are unique and almost alien to this planet. Staying here for a few days was one of the many highlights of my recent trip to Europe. On the way to Uchisar (Nevsehir province, Turkey), one of the most impressive villages of Cappadocia, there is a place where most tourist buses make a stop, because it offers a great panoramic view, not only to the village, but also to the entrance of Pigeon Valley. That's were you can find this strange tree. Floating above the amazing landscape of Cappadocia, Turkey at dawn with hundreds of other hot air balloons was such an amazing experience. The sensation of drifting through the surreal and alien like region was both calming and exhilarating at once. It's a memory I want to preserve and I think this piece fills that role for me, Placing a mark in my mind of what that morning felt like.
