A black and white image of Great Western Railway Engine 2857 at Sunset. The engine driver is offering the single track working token to the Signalman who is just out of shot. Without the relevant token the train can't proceed along the single track sections. Engine 2857 was built in Swindon in 1918 and was in service until 1963. This class of engine (2800) was responsible for hauling most of the long distance heavy freight trains on the GWR / BR western region for almost 60 years!

The engine driver is offering the single track working token to the Signalman who is just out of shot. Without the relevant token the train can't proceed along the single track sections. Royal Scot was built in 1927 by London Midland & Scottish Railway for the express service from London to Birmingham, Manchester through to Glasgow. She was chosen to appear on behalf of Britain at the 1933 'Century of Progress' exhibition in the USA and toured the USA and Canada covering 11 194 miles.

In 2015 Mayflower started operating on the British main line for the first time in over twenty years. She carries the early British Railways apple green livery as originally delivered in 1948. A black and white image of Tornado on loan to the Severn Valley Railway leaving Highley station on an Autumn afternoon in October 2015. Tornado is a Peppercorn class A1 Pacific 4-6-2 completed in 2008 to the original specification. It's the only example of an LNER Peppercorn Class A1 in existence, as all the original A1 locomotives were scrapped without preservation.

A black and white image of 5428 LMS Class 5 or "Black Five" as the class is lovingly called. 5428 is a steam locomotive built in 1937 for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). In 1967 it was withdrawn from British Rail service, preserved and named Eric Treacy after the former Bishop of Wakefield, an eminent railway photographer. The Black Fives were a mixed traffic locomotive, a "do-anything go-anywhere" type, designed by William Stanier and several members of the class survived to the last day of steam on British Railways in 1968, with eighteen of the type making it into preservation. 5428 is photographed here on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway near Goathland.

A black and white image of Princess Coronation Class 6233 Duchess of Sutherland steam locomotive built in 1938 for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). It was built for express passenger services, including the Royal Scot service between London and Glasgow. It was retired from British Railways in 1964 and was saved from being scrapped by Billy Butlin who displayed it at the Heads-of-Ayr holiday camp in Scotland. It's now fully restored in LMS "Crimson Lake" and photographed here on the Severn Valley Railway at Highley Station in Shropshire, England.

HMS Belfast moored as a museum ship on the River Thames in London. This Town-class light cruiser was built for the Royal Navy by Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast and launched in 1938 on St Patrick's day. She served in the Second World War and the Korean War before entering reserve in 1963.

It could be 1965! A class 25 Sulzer Bo Bo in British Railways two tone green livery, pulls a rake of BR red coaches through lush green moorland in Yorkshire. BR Class 25 D7628 built by Beyer Peacock in Manchester in 1965 and named Sybilla in preservation is the locomotive in the photograph seen here on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Two Hunslet Austerity tank engines with a rake of dogfish ballast wagons photographed in the Royal Forest of Dean. The lead engine is Jessie built in 1937, she spent all her working life at the East Moors steelworks in Cardiff as no 18 in the fleet. The second engine is Rennes a War Department engine built in 1944, number WD 152 and operated on the Longmoor Military Railway (LMR). This engine worked for the National Coal Board from 1961, ending its career in South Wales as No. 8 at the Mountain Ash colliery in 1979.

43106 is the only surviving example of an LMS Ivatt Class 4 Mogul (2-6-0 wheel arrangement). The locomotive was designed by H.G. Ivatt for medium freight work but was also used on passenger services. BR classified them as 4MT (MT for Mixed Traffic). This locomotive entered service in April 1951 and officially withdrawn from service in June 1968. 43106 can be seen on the Severn Valley Railway and is photographed here approaching Arley Station.

Two Great Western Railway Class 4575 small prairies working together in the Royal Forest of Dean. Engine 5541 is a resident engine on the Dean Forest Railway with Engine 5521 as a visiting locomotive. 5521 is painted in London Transport colours and carries the number L150 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Metropolitan line.

The Hawker Hurricane is a British Second World War fighter aircraft that was built by Hawker Aircraft Ltd. for the Royal Air Force (RAF). It was overshadowed by the Spitfire's role during the Battle of Britain, however the Hurricane inflicted 60 percent of the losses sustained by the Luftwaffe.
