This is my own edited version of the public domain image engraved on plaques attached to two of the Pioneer space probes launched in the 1970's. The man in the image is usually holding his hand up waving, I've modified it so as to make the heavy rock sign.
The Pioneer plaques are a pair of gold-anodized aluminium plaques which were placed on board the 1972 Pioneer 10 and 1973 Pioneer 11 spacecraft, featuring a pictorial message, in case either Pioneer 10 or 11 is intercepted by extraterrestrial life. The plaques show the nude figures of a human male and female along with several symbols that are designed to provide information about the origin of the spacecraft.
The view across Brisbane City, Australia from a park on the highest point within the city. The fruit bats are coming out to feed in the evening as the rainbow lorikeets return to their communal roosts. A hoop pine stands silhouetted, the progeny of the original hoop pines of Brisbane thats lineage has grown here in unbroken succession for over 200 million years. A touch of the wild in a modern day city with the moon reminding us of the unending wildness of the cosmos beyond. Reminding us of how young our species is and how much we have transformed the wild in such a short space of time yet also how brief our dominance on earth may be if we continue to undermine the environment that supports us.
An image repurposed from books published in the 1800’s no longer under any copyright restriction according to the British Library where this volume is held and released with over 1 million other images on flickr to be reused and repurposed freely.
