he 11th Airborne Division ("Angels") was a United States Army airborne division.Held in reserve in the United States for the first half of 1944, in June the division was transferred to the Pacific Theater of Operations. The 11th Airborne saw its first action on the Battle for the Philippines, but in a traditional infantry role and later in an airborne and glider role.

The regiment was sent to the island of Mindoro as the 11th Airborne was preparing for its part in the Battle of Luzon. On 3 February 1945 the 511th on board 48 C-47 aircraft performed a combat jump on Tagaytay Ridge. During the Battle of Manila, the 511th fought through the Japanese Genko Line from 5–12 February, penetrating as far into Manila as the Dewey-Libertad area, before turning east to attack and recapture Fort William McKinley (Fort Bonifacio, now Bonifacio Global City).

The 11th Airborne Division was airlifted from Okinawa to Atsugi Airdrome, 50 kilometres (30 mi) from Tokyo. Other Allied personnel followed. Hokkaido was occupied by the 11th Airborne Division.

At 07:00 on the morning of 23 February, B Company took off in ten C-47 Skytrain transport aircraft, arriving over their drop zone shortly afterwards.[54] As the first paratroopers landed, the reconnaissance platoon and the supporting guerilla fighters opened fire on the camp's defences, using Bazooka rounds to penetrate the concrete pillboxes, and then entered the camp to engage its garrison. The paratroopers soon joined the battle, and by 07:30 the Japanese guards had been overcome and the 2000 internees were being rounded up and readied for evacuation.

The 11th Airborne division was inactivated for the final time on 29 June 1965. The colors and subordinate unit designations of the 1st Cavalry Division were transferred from its post in Korea to Fort Benning, Georgia, where they were used to reflag the 11th Air Assault Division into the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). Concurrently, the personnel and equipment of the 1st Cavalry Division.

The 11th Special Forces Group (Airborne), US Army Reserves was inactivated on 15 September 1995 as part of a restructuring of US Army Special Forces units. The 11th Special Forces Group (Airborne), US Army Reserve was attached to the 97th Army Reserve Command at Fort Meade, Maryland. For a number of years in the late 1960's, Miller Field, Staten Island, New York was home to the headquarters of the Army's 11th Special Forces Group.
