The A-10 is more commonly known by its nicknames "Warthog" or "Hog". Its secondary mission is to provide forward air controller - airborne (FAC-A) support, by directing other aircraft in attacks on ground targets. Aircraft used primarily in this role are designated OA-10. With a variety of upgrades and wing replacements, the A-10's service life may be extended to 2028.

A Fairchild Republic A-10C Thunderbolt II of the Maryland Air National Guard and assigned to the 104th Fighter Squadron. Photographed on departure from Prestwick Airport, Scotland, heading back with KC-135 tanker support to its home base. It was part of a deployment of ten " Warthog " aircraft taking part in Exercise Swift Response operating from locations in Eastern Europe and the Baltic region.
