I often wonder whilst walking my dog Marmite... When he sniffs and smells and seems to hunt for blades of grass to chew... Why does he choose the blade of grass..? Might there be some kind of chemicals within the grass that he can smell, something that may aid his digestion, because he is very selective of the grass..? Whilst in Bangor University - I researched 'the social behaviour of ants' and wrote an essay about it... very interesting creatures... So how about the bees? I am sure they are socially fascinating too... but I often wonder whether the animals around us - 'know more than what we think they do'... Its one of the reasons for my interest in photographing and studying them. Hemlock and cow parsley are very similar...

Cartoon Bees Pattern

Working on the parameters of what can be done graphically ~ and I'm sure there's room for improvement. A friend recently mentioned and raised the point of 'focus stacking'... Whilst this piece isn't all in focus - it does lend itself to some fine detail... The idea to me of layering images using multiple exposure with blended focus points to allow a completely sharp all in focus image... doesn't fit with my principles of contemporary and true and genuine photography... I didn't spend time photographing apples and oranges and learning depth of field using aperture rings with single lens reflex cameras - to end up creating images and artworks - with very little depth of field and without much depth in itself to the artworks... ...

Its very difficult to be unbiased when you love an image so much... but I do think that this is a good one..! Listening to 'many nature photographers' talking about 'focus on the eye closest to camera'... yes, well, it all depends... and it depends on the subject matter in question..!? I decided that in this image... I wanted to focus on the most important part of the bee responsible for 'spreading the love' with these charismatic essential little creatures - and that is both the body and the abdomen! Some bees collect 'pollen on their hairy bodies', then carry it back to their nests on their hind legs, whilst others carry pollen on the 'hairs on their abdomen'.
