looking through the doorway of on of the old telephone rooms at Battery Mishler, Old Fort Stevens, near Hammond, Oregon, an upturned mason jar and a large tin can can be seen in the old lantern well. A metal ladder and a wooden stick from either a broom or a mop peek out from behind the entrance. Because of the fire several decades ago there was not anything else to be seen in the room besides some holes in the distressed concrete walls that used to lead telephone wires to one of those old switchboards that telephone operators used to plug things into to connect calls.

It isn't a phone booth or a phone box. It's a telephone room from Battery Mishler which was once a harbor defense command post during World War II. the alcove where the phone once stood now stands empty as theconrete begins to crumble around it. the under ground lighting makes it appear white with blue tones and shadows.

Now all that remains is a shell of what once was a powerful and vibrant military center. the low lighting in this photo gives it an otherworldly ghostly effect like trying to peer into the past.

It was in use as early as 1890 if I recall correctly. if you take the tour stay close to your guide because it is seriously dark in there and getting lost could be dangerous and spooky. Bring a good flashlight and non slip shoes. The floor is damp the ceilings are drippy with wetness, the beams are rusty and corroded, and the concrete walls are aged with time. When my son and I took the underground tour of Battery Mishler, I took photos of lots of the old remnants for world war II equipment. It is all rusty and corroded with neglect, but still fascinating despite a fire that came through at one point and burned everything. This is the lower section of the power hoist, or what remains of it. Low light photo using the night photography feature on my canon rebel t2i causes an ethereal light flare effect as the light escapes through the exit doorway of the gun emplacement. If you look closely on the left there is another metal ring on the wall next to a ladder. through the doorway there is a ladder that went down at one point, but the hole has been filled in. Part of this military installation have been in use since the civil war. As changes were made ober the years some things were outmoded and outdated but partially left in place as changes were made such as the ladder that now goes nowhere.
