To the right is the cochlea, which translates sound vibrations into electrical impulses that are carried to the brain by nerves.

Organ of Corti. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the organ of Corti from the cochlea of the inner ear. The bony capsule that encloses the organ has been removed to reveal the organ's spiral structure. Rows of sensory hairs within the organ of Corti convert sound vibrations into nerve impulses that are sent along the auditory nerve to the brain. Different sound frequencies stimulate hairs in different positions along the spiral. Low frequencies stimulate those near the top of the spiral and high frequencies stimulate those near the bottom.

A row of hair cells can be seen, with a crescent-shaped arrangement of stereocilia on top of each one. These stereocilia usually touch the tectorial membrane above (not seen), so as to detect any tiny movements in the membrane resulting from sound-induced pressures in the inner ear fluids. These movements are then relayed to the brain as electrical impulses, where they are deciphered as sound.

Organ of Corti. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of sensory hair cells from the organ of Corti, in the cochlea of the inner ear. These are the outer rows of hairs. These cells are surrounded by a fluid called the endolymph. As sound enters the ear it causes waves to form in the endolymph, which in turn cause these hairs to move. The movement is converted into an electrical signal, which is passed to the brain. Each V- shaped arrangement of hairs lies on the top of a single cell. Magnification: x8000 when printed 10cm wide.
