I love watching pelicans fly and dive into the water on the Gulf Coast. This is my drawing of a pelican in flight.

Taken at one of my bird photography workshops at Golden Beach on the Sunshine Coast. Nothing looks more comical than a pelican about to land. A friend once said to me "when they are flying they look like experts, when they are landing they look like they are still on their first lesson."

American White Pelican Gliding Along by Debra Martz The American White Pelicans were flying to and fro at the spillway. The early morning light creating wonderful shadows. The shadows casted by the wings of this pelican created neat shapes making an almost abstract bird in flight image. Brown Pelicans In Flight by Debra Martz Oh the joys of being able to drive on the beach in South Texas. This particular day there were more Brown Pelicans than normally. There were hundreds of them! I stopped and watched from a distance for quite some time and enjoyed seeing them take to flight in varying numbers, then circle out over the water and return to the shoreline. Pelican Togetherness by Debra Martz When North America's second largest bird, with an average wingspan of 9 feet, flies in a tight-knit group like this, I wonder how they do it with such grace!
