Puget Sound Baseball T-Shirts

Jafco Co. was a multimillion-dollar chain of American catalog showrooms founded by Sidney Z. Jaffe in 1957. Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, the company sold a wide variety of items from stereo and photographic equipment to toys and furniture in locations throughout the Puget Sound area. Though retail locations stocked many common items, Jafco sent catalogs to all of their customers, allowing for pickup at their local store and by delivery through mail-order. While it may seem strange today, catalog shopping was pretty normal in the past, though as a kid visiting these places, I can attest that the stores were very strange.

Herfy's was a regional chain of hamburger joints throughout the Puget Sound area beginning in 1963, long before the national chains began coming to town. They were known for their signature "Herfy Burger," with secret sauce, of course, and their menu had a very unique flavor, unlike any other burger place at the time. While the food was ok, the best part is that they had a life-size fiberglass cow at each location which was a hit with the kids and would no doubt be the scene of many a selfie these days.

The Pacific Northwest is known for its amazing sunsets, but this one was especially astounding. I saw it from the Edmonds to Kinston ferry, while on a trip to La Push on the Olympic Peninsula. The purples, oranges, blues, and golden yellows were so vivid and created radiant reflections. The whole sky appeared to glow, and many ferry riders gave up the comfy seat inside to watch the sunset from the deck. I love how the Olympic Mountains are silhouetted in blue, purple, and black, with everything else glowing orange and purple. This photo might seem oversaturated, but I actually desaturated it slightly from the original to try to slightly tone down the oranges.

Edmonds, Washington is a lovely town north of Seattle, with a ferry dock and a fishing pier. The city's pier is a lovely place to catch fish or just enjoy an evening stroll, and you can observe the ferry coming and going to Kingston, which takes people to lovely spots on the Olympic Peninsula. One this particular night, the sunset was quite feathery and cast a lovely light on the silhouettes of fishermen and women as well as casual strollers of all ages. Edmonds is also a destination for quaint shops, yummy restaurants, and art shows. This design is an original photo with painterly effects applied to deepen the colors and add painterly texture.

On February 1, 1988, Seattle area Top-40 station KNBQ flipped to an oldies format as “K-Best 97.3.” It picked up the KBSG-FM call letters. K-Best concentrated on the biggest hits of the ’60s, with some ’70s songs with a few late ’50s hits. As the station moved into the ’90s, the ’70s titles were increased and the ’50s songs were removed. In 2007, traded KBSG as part of a multi-market station swap. KBSG was rebranded from “KBSG 97.3” to “The New B97.3,” and dropped the word “oldies” from the station’s title. The station’s playlist was moved to more ’70s and ’80s music, with fewer ’60s titles, making it more of a classic rock format. Just one year later, the call letters would change again as the station went to an all news and talk format.

Princess Angeline was the matriarch of the J Pod, southern resident, orcas (Orcinus orca) in the Salish Sea. She died in 2019. These orcas are endangered and their survival depends on humans keeping the water quieter and cleaner and also saving the Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) that the orcas eat. Let's hope we can save them!

Lumpsuckers (Eumicrotremus orbis) are some of my favorite fish in the Salish Sea. Their pelvic fins have evolved into a suction cup on their belly and instead of scales, they have cone-shaped plates, called tubercles. And they are cute!
