The peanut butter brand known as Sunny Jim was manufactured in Seattle, Washington by Germanus Wilhelm Firnstahl in 1921 after he moved to Seattle from Wisconsin and bought a peanut roaster. Firnstahl based the apple-cheeked character seen on the jars on his son, Lowell. By the 1950s, the brand accounted for nearly a third of all peanut butter sold in the Puget Sound area. The company was sold in 1979, though the large sign remained on the Airport Way South factory for decades after the peanut butter was no longer in production, resulting in the "Sunny Jim building" becoming a well-known landmark. In 1997, there was a fire at this plant (then owned by the city of Seattle) which destroyed the sign and a portion of the building.

Hood Canal, Puget Sound This is the very first digital painting I did on my iPad with ProCreate. It was really an experiment, but turned out really well. It looks a bit like a traditional watercolor. The inspiration comes from the scenery around where I live but could be any where really up here in the Northwest. It looks like a typical Pacific Northwest day in well Winter, Spring or Fall. We get a lot of cloudy misty dreary days, but we also have a lot of nice scenery too. Here's to the first painting! I also do custom commissions. Other than riding the occasional 3' freighter wave, not a whole lot of surfing action in Puget Sound. If you could ride waves in Seattle, it would have probably looked something like this, or at least it might have in the glorious '80s.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer was founded in 1863 as the weekly Seattle Gazette, and was later published daily in broadsheet format. It was long one of the city's two daily newspapers, along with The Seattle Times, until it became an online-only publication in 2009. The P-I is known for the iconic 13.5-ton, 30-foot neon globe which sat atop its headquarters since 1948 and featured the words "It's in the P-I" rotating around the globe and an 18-foot  eagle perched atop with wings stretched upwards.

Tacoma has a population of 198,397, making it Washington’s third largest city. It is an urban port city that serves as the county seat of Pierce County. It is located on the Puget Sound, about 51 km southwest of Seattle. Tacoma is a hub of business in the South Sound region.

"Puget Sound Television" (1980–1987) KCPQ (known as Fox 13 on the air, and styled as Q13 FOX on the logo) channel 13, is the Fox television affiliate station in Tacoma, Washington serving the Seattle/Tacoma television market, owned by the Tribune Company. KCPQ shares its studio and office facilities with sister station KZJO on the west shore of Lake Union in Seattle's Westlake neighborhood, and its transmitter is located on Gold Mountain in Bremerton, Washington.

Shelter Mountain Inn is a fictional location in 2002's 'The Ring' that plays a key role in the film. Shelter Mountain is not a mountain, but actually built on the coast of Moesko Island near a cliff edge, and Shelter Mountain Inn is a large wooded property that rents individual cabins for those looking for a rustic getaway. The Inn has a large lake located beyond the innkeeper's office, where visitors can fish, swim, and take canoes out on the lake. As we learn in the movie, an old, deep well was built in the middle of a clearing not too far from the cliff, but it was built over with Cabin 12 at some point.

Having a business infested by worms and maggots is typically not the best calling card, but then again, Linc’s Tackle on Rainier Avenue wasn't your typical merchant. Linc's Tackle stood, virtually unchanged by time, on the outskirts of Little Saigon since 1950. It was back then that Lincoln Beppu, a Japanese immigrant who ran Togo’s Tackle Shop at Third and James in downtown Seattle before being interned during World War II, first opened the eponymous storefront. After the way Linc returned to his shop and his family went on to serve six generations of Seattleites and taught tens of thousands how to fish. The Beppu family had a unique business repairing reels and spooling them with fresh fishing line, tying custom-made leaders and the like.

The Captain Puget Show ran on Seattle local TV throughout much of the 50’s and 60’s. He sang sea chanteys and took kids on adventures in the Pacific Northwest. A fond memory of my father’s childhood.

Herfy's was a regional chain of hamburger joints throughout the Puget Sound area beginning in 1963, long before the national chains began coming to town. They were known for their signature "Herfy Burger," with secret sauce, of course, and their menu had a very unique flavor, unlike any other burger place at the time. While the food was ok, the best part is that they had a life-size fiberglass cow at each location which was a hit with the kids and would no doubt be the scene of many a selfie these days.

Jafco Co. was a multimillion-dollar chain of American catalog showrooms founded by Sidney Z. Jaffe in 1957. Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, the company sold a wide variety of items from stereo and photographic equipment to toys and furniture in locations throughout the Puget Sound area. Though retail locations stocked many common items, Jafco sent catalogs to all of their customers, allowing for pickup at their local store and by delivery through mail-order. While it may seem strange today, catalog shopping was pretty normal in the past, though as a kid visiting these places, I can attest that the stores were very strange.
