Short track racing is where stock car racing got its start after leaving the back road events behind in favor of organized and regulated competition. Unlike the larger tracks, short-track events offer fans and competitors close racing, where the bodies of the cars actually rub against one another on oval tracks of less than one mile in length. Known as the 'minor leagues' of racing, this is where aspiring drivers, mechanics, and tuners can get into racing on a budget, and have a ton of fun doing it. Most professional drivers gets started short trackin' before making their way from these rural bullrings to the superspeedways.

The Bunnell Motor Company was founded in the '30s in Bunnell, Florida as an engine repair and rebuild shop. W. H. Atkinson II purchased the business in 1943, keeping things business as usual for a while, but his interest in stock car racing saw Bunnell Motor Company begin offering some high performance engines as a way to be a part of the stock car racing scene. By the early '50s, his son W. H. Atkinson III was getting into racing, and of course, it was one of dad's engines that powered his race car. By the late '50s, Bunnell Motor Company was focused almost entirely on stock car and drag racing engines, and after his dad died in 1962, Atkinson III had Bunnell Motor Company exclusively building high performance engines.

North Wilkesboro Speedway is a short oval racetrack located on Route 421, 80 miles north of Charlotte. The speedway opened its doors on May 18, 1947, as a dirt track with the first official event promoted as a modified race, including heat races and a feature event. The original dirt oval was paved in 1957 and continued to operate until the track's closure in 1996.

Ernest Holmes Sr. was a mechanic in Chattanooga, Tennessee who is credited with inventing the tow truck in 1916. After helping a friend recover his car using three poles, a pulley and a chain hooked to the chassis of his 1913 sedan, Holmes realized that his contraption could be useful beyond just this one need. After refining his invention, Holmes began manufacturing what we now know as the traditional tow truck or wrecker, receiving a patent on his design in 1918. Holmes sold both turn key tow trucks and the wrecker body as a bolt on unit to auto shops, racetracks, and garages, and went on to design a multitude of tow truck offerings, covering just about every recovery need, including heavy-duty use by the U.S. military.
