North Wilkesboro Speedway is a short oval racetrack located on Route 421, 80 miles north of Charlotte. The speedway opened its doors on May 18, 1947, as a dirt track with the first official event promoted as a modified race, including heat races and a feature event. While an attendance of about 3,000 people was expected, a crowd in excess of 10,000 showed up to see one of the famous Flock brothers compete (and ultimately win the race). The track is just 5/8 of a mile around and features a unique uphill backstretch and downhill frontstretch that played into it's reputation as one of the fastest short-tracks of the '40s and '50s. The original dirt oval was paved in 1957 and continued to operate until the track's closure in 1996.

What is now known as "STP" was invented by German scientists during WWII as a response to Germany's need for lubrication of the German war-machine vehicles. WWII US Army divisions in Africa that overtook German Afrika Korps vehicles alleged that the Germans employed an engine oil that is now known as STP formulation full-strength in their air-cooled 4-cylinder engines, which successfully traveled through the hot African Desert war-front without seizing due to friction and extreme heat. How the Germans' original chemical synthesis formulation found its way to the U.S. after WWII is not known, but most likely it made that journey along with many of the other German innovations through the distribution of technology through the spoils of war.

In the early 20th century, drivers came to prove their prowess in Daytona Beach and several land speed records were set in the process. This eventually led to some loosely organized races, though the first “official” race on Daytona Beach took place in 1936. The track ran due south for two miles on A1A, which runs parallel to the ocean. Drivers then accessed the beach at the South Turn, went two miles on the hard-packed beach surface, and turned away from the beach at the North Turn (now the location of a great restaurant). It sounds crazy to hold stock car racing events on the beach nowadays, but for about two decades, it was THE place to race if you were an up-and-coming racer wanting to rub wheels with the big boys.

For the entire 1981 season, Earnhardt won neither a pole nor a race. Late that year, he announced he would join Bud Moore's Ford Thunderbird team in 1982. Dale began his drive back to the front by winning a pole for the 500 in Atlanta in March of 1982, his first number one starting position since September 1979 at Dover. In April, He stopped his winless streak at 39 races when he narrowly beat Cale Yarborough to the checkered flag for the Rebel 500 at Arlington. His last previous win came at the National 500 at Charlotte in 1980. In victory lane, Dale Earnhardt thanked his sponsor for staying with him, then praised Bud Moore and his crew, who had made the #15 Jeans Machine undoubtedly the strongest stock car on the field.

This Pennsylvania-based performance legend started out as a maker of motor mounts for engine swaps and floor-shifters back in 1958, but they steadily expanded their product line through the 1960s. Hurst wheels, Line/Loc, and Swifter Shifter gloves were developed among other items, and later, Airheart Brakes and the Schiefer Manufacturing Company, which made clutches and other driveline components, were acquired. Hurst Performance floor-shifters were skillfully engineered, reliable and stirring in appearance, plus, their marketing was in tune with the times, catering to the flourishing muscle car movement of the 1960s. Their shifters infiltrated the drag racing, stock car racing, off-road racing and many other areas of motorsports.

Super Stock & Drag Illustrated was founded by John "Monk" Reynolds, publisher of Eastern Drag News and owner of Pennsylvania's US30 drag strip. The first issue was November 1964 and the magazine published continuously until June 1996 when it was re-titled 'Drag Racing' and only made it a few more years until a final issue in March 1999. The magazine was a thoughtful mix of drag racing coverage, tech articles, and street machines, which gave it pretty diverse appeal to gear heads of all sorts.

Late at night, he’d go where the Los Angeles street racers gathered to set up their matches, scout out the losers of those matches, and ask them if they wanted to go faster, promising that his dual-carb manifolds would help them do exactly that. He delivered the goods and the rest is as they say, hot rod history.
