The 1st Aviation Brigade traces its origins to the Vietnam War. In April 1965 the U.S. Army Aviation Brigade (Provisional) was activated with the existing 13th, 14th, 52nd, and 145th Aviation Battalions, already in South Vietnam, reporting to it.

The 101st Airborne Division ("Screaming Eagles")s an elite modular specialized light infantry division of the United States Army trained for air assault operations. During World War II, it was renowned for its role in Operation Overlord (the D-Day landings and airborne landings on June 6, 1944, in Normandy, France), Operation Market Garden, the liberation of the Netherlands and, perhaps most famously, its action during the Battle of the Bulge around the city of Bastogne, Belgium. During the Vietnam War, the 101st Airborne Division fought in several major campaigns and battles including the fight for Hamburger Hill in May 1969.

The 244th Aviation Brigade became a component of the 11th Theater Aviation Command when the command activated on 16 September 2007. At that time, a number of units which were formerly under the brigade were transferred away and several units within the brigade were reconsolidated. Until the transfer, the 244th Aviation Brigade was the largest aviation brigade in the United States Army and continues to be the only aviation brigade in the United States Army Reserve.

On 1 August 1965, the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) was sent to Vietnam. Aviators participated in 14 campaigns and received seven decorations during its seven years of duty in Vietnam. The first Army aviator to be awarded the Medal of Honor in the Vietnam War was a member of the 227th Aviation Battalion.

Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division “Keep Up The Fight,” the Latin motto “PERGITE PROELIUM” found at the base of the Distinctive Unit Insignia of Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division aptly describes the brief history of the unit. Forged from scratch to prosecute the War on Terrorism on 16 September 2004, the Battalion deployed to combat four times over a period of less than ten years—and each time earned a Meritorious Unit Commendation for their exemplary service supporting the troops on the front lines of battle. On 25 April 2014, the Battalion cased its colors during a formal inactivation ceremony for the 4th Brigade Combat Team held at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

The 11th Aviation Brigade deployed elements in support of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, recieving participation credit for the Southwest Asia Campaigns Defense of Saudi Arabia, Liberation and Defense of Kuwait, and Cease-Fire. Following the war, the Brigade was assigned to sector security in the former XVIII Corps area of responsibility. The front covered more than 200 kilometers.
