Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour was an American restaurant parlor chain founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1963. It had a turn of the century vibe loosely based on the late 1800s/early 1900s with both the decor and employees looking (and speaking) the part. Farrell's was a hit with families, especially with the kids, as their very American menu was bolstered with countless soda and iced cream based deserts. It was very much a dining experience as specialty desserts like the Hot Fudge Volcano were ceremoniously carried in on a stretcher like tray carried between two servers, usually accompanied by a song, so between that and the player piano, Farrell's was not the place to go for a quiet bite to eat.

Darts - Supporting the eye patch industry since the 1800s

This depiction of a Pterodactylus is based on an 1800s illustration from the book "La Terre Avant le Deluge" illustrated by Edouard Riou. I've recreated his original illustration in my own digital block print style, simplifying it to just the swooping Pterodactyl and its soon to be snack dragonfly.

At age 22, in 1840, Robert Edwin Dietz bought a small lamp and oil shop in Brooklyn, NY. Robert, with his brother William, called the company Dietz, Brother, and Company. One of their first products was a candle lantern; they later made sperm whale oil lamps, girandoles, hall lamps, and chandeliers. Three more of the brothers joined the company in 1855, and the name became Dietz and Company. In 1868, Robert sold his interest in Dietz and Company and partnered with Absalom Smith to form a new company, Dietz & Smith. When Smith purchased 6,000 velocipedes (a mid-19th-century bicycle) on company credit, Robert decided he was a bad business partner, bought Smith’s interest, and continued the company as R.E. Dietz.

Menelik II of Ethiopia (1844-1913). Reproduction of an 1898 painting by the French painter Paul Buffet (1864-1941) of Emperor Menelik II of Ethiopia fighting the Italians at the Battle of Adwa (Adua), on 2nd March 1896. Menelik II was Negus (monarch) of Shewa (an historic region of Ethiopia) from 1866-1889 and then Emperor of Ethiopia from 1889 to his death in 1913. He is credited for restoring the ancient Ethiopian Kingdom to its former glory of the Axumite Empire, one of the four most powerful kingdoms of the ancient world. This climactic battle of the First Italo-Ethiopian War was a decisive defeat for Italy and secured Ethiopian sovereignty.

The Rudolph Wurlitzer Company, usually referred to as simply Wurlitzer, is an American company started in Cincinnati in 1853 by German immigrant (Franz) Rudolph Wurlitzer. The company initially imported stringed, woodwind and brass instruments from Germany for resale in the United States. Wurlitzer enjoyed initial success, largely due to defense contracts to provide musical instruments to the U.S. military. In 1880, the company began manufacturing pianos and eventually relocated to North Tonawanda, New York. It quickly expanded to make band organs, orchestrions, player pianos and pipe or theatre organs popular in theatres during the days of silent movies.

Whalers catching a whale, 19th century artwork. Oar-powered whaling boats in rough conditions in the South Seas as they prepare to kill a harpooned whale. The whale, which is spouting air from its blowhole, has several harpoons in its side. As it grows weaker, the whalers will use their spears and other harpoons to kill it. The whale's body will then be hauled on board the main ship (seen in background) and processed for its valuable oil. In the same year this artwork was published (1868) the modern explosive harpoon was invented.

Portland cement was developed in Britain beginning in the middle of the 18th century. Its name is derived from its similarity to Portland stone, a type of building stone quarried on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. Modern Portland cement development began in 1756 when combinations of different limestones and additives, including trass and pozzolanas were added during the construction of a lighthouse. Portland cement had been imported into America for decades, but in 1871, Eagle Brand Portland Cement began producing it stateside in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and by the early 20th century, American-made Portland cement had displaced most of the imported product.

Ojibwe Native American petition. Artwork of the birch bark petition presented by Native Americans of the Ojibwe Tribe to US President Fillmore in 1849. The lines in the image unify the hearts and minds of the figures, confirming the authority of the delegation to speak for the Lake Superior Clans. The delegation is lead by Chief Buffalo of the Crane Clan. He is supported by a group of headmen represented by the totem of their clan: the catfish, man-fish, bear and three martens.
