The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston. The Red Sox compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. Founded in 1901 as one of the American League's eight charter franchises, the Red Sox' home ballpark has been Fenway Park since 1912. The "Red Sox" name was chosen by the team owner, John I. Taylor, c. 1908, following the lead of previous teams that had been known as the "Boston Red Stockings," including the Boston Braves (now the Atlanta Braves).

In 1886, Boston fielded another minor league team, as the Boston Blues became members of the New England League. The Blues finished the 1886 season with a record of 35–63, placing 6th and last in the New England League under managers Walter Burnham and Tim Murnane. The Boston Blues finished in the New England League standings with Brockton (45–56), Haverhill (59–38), Lawrence (42–55), Newburyport Clamdiggers/Lynn (53–52) and Portland (66–36). The Blues their played home games at South End Grounds.

The Braves played in Boston, from 1871 to 1952, after which they moved to Milwaukee to become the Milwaukee Braves, and then eventually to Atlanta, to become the Atlanta Braves. The Boston Franchise played at South End Grounds from 1871 to 1914 and at Braves Field from 1915 to 1952. Braves Field is now Nickerson Field of Boston University. The franchise, from Boston to Milwaukee to Atlanta, is the oldest continuous professional baseball franchise.

The Boston Red Stockings formed as the charter member of the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players in 1871, and several name changes later, The Boston Braves were born in 1912. The Boston franchise played at South End Grounds from 1871 to 1914 and at Braves Field from 1915 to 1952. The franchise would go on to move from Boston to Milwaukee, and then again to Atlanta, making it the oldest continuous professional baseball franchise in the country.

The Boston Reds were a 19th-century baseball team located in Boston, Massachusetts that played in the Players' League in 1890 and in the American Association in 1891. They played in the Congress Street Grounds in the 1890s. The team took its name from the successful Boston club of the National Association and National League often known as the (Boston) Red Stockings. The club lasted only two seasons, but in those two seasons they were league champions.
