The Beach Shack on the 'prom' west of the town's pier was intended to bring a 'Caribbean surf shack aesthetic' to this stretch of the seafront. The cliff lift carries passengers between the beach & the Highcliff Marriott Hotel. Neither are open in January. However, the places that do open their doors throughout the winter months can do pretty well as many locals prefer to visit the beach at this time of the year.

Boscombe Pier Number of views as of 22nd May 2019 = 2230. A deserted Boscombe Pier, bathed in early morning January sunlight. Opened in 1889, and several rebuilds later, the structure was closed in 2005 as it was deemed to be unsafe. Thankfully it was restored and re-opened in 2008. Website Nothing To See Here named it Britain’s coolest pier in 2009 and the National Piers Society voted it Pier of the Year in 2010. Date: 21st January 2012.

Detroit Tin Number of views as of 11th March 2018 = 1220. The gleaming paintwork, whitewall front tyre and polished chrome of a Cadillac Eldorado Seville, circa 1959. Don't know the history of this vehicle, but it somehow made it over to England, and has been painstakingly restored to its former glory. Not bad for a sofa on wheels! Location: Bournemouth, Dorset. Even at this time of year, the gorse bushes are beginning to flower. On the horizon, to the left - Southbourne and Hengistbury Head. To the right - Alum Bay and The Needles on the Isle of Wight. Hengistbury Head, Christmas Day 2014 Number of views as of 8th April 2018 = 700. Hengistbury Head at the eastern end of Poole Bay shelters Christchurch Harbour from the prevailing westerly winds. The remains of both Stone Age and Iron Age settlements provide evidence that the Head has been inhabited on and off for over 12,500 years. In more recent times, 18th & 19th century smugglers landed their cargoes on the beach, and there’s even the remains of a Victorian quarry and port. Modern amenities include a large car park, popular cafe, and a golf course, not to mention the brightly coloured “Noddy” train, a favourite with children and adults alike. Sheds Of Any Colour But Grey Number of views as of 9th July 2018 = 1400. Looking for all the world like a life-size Dulux colour chart, these brightly coloured beach huts can be found on the East Undercliff, between Bournemouth and Boscombe (Dorset, England). Date: 14th October 2012.

Mudeford Spit on Christmas Day 2014 Number of views as of 7th February 2018 = 530. A view of Mudeford Spit and the entrance to Christchurch Harbour, taken from Hengistbury Head, near Bournemouth, Dorset. A beach hut in this idyllic location could set you back in excess of the average UK house price. Mind you, some people do live down here in the summer months. Date: 25th December 2014.

In the Bleak Midwinter Number of views as of 10th June 2017 = 1000. Number of sales as of 10th June 2017 = 8. St John's Church Moordown, Bournemouth, Dorset. Designed by architect G.E.Street and completed in 1874, St John's is unusual because of its north-south orientation (most churches are east-west). The church tower was added in 1923 and houses eight bells, cast at a cost of £301. Date: 2nd December 2010.

Snow White, Bridge Red Number of views as of 18th October 2018 = 720. A wintry scene in Bournemouth Gardens (Dorset, England). This attractive footbridge crosses the Bourne stream from which the town takes its name. Date 18th January 2013.

The Water Tower, Upper Gardens, Bournemouth Number of views as of 8th June 2017 = 1030. Built in 1883, this former water tower is situated in the Upper Gardens in Bournemouth, Dorset, England. The gardens follow the Bourne Stream from Branksome (where it emerges from a pipe) a distance of over 2 miles to the Pier approach by the beach. There are 4 sections, namely Coy Pond, the Upper Gardens, Central Gardens and Lower Gardens. The Lower Gardens are a popular meeting place during the summer months but tend to be avoided by those 'in the know', who prefer the peace and tranquility to be found further upstream. Beach at Southbourne Number of views as of 18th October 2018 = 380. The beach at Fisherman's Walk, Southbourne, a few miles to the east of Bournemouth (Dorset, England). Further east is Hengistbury Head (top left) sheltering the entrance to Christchurch harbour, and beyond (top right) you can just make out the Needles and cliffs on the Isle of Wight. Barnstormers! Number of views as of 18th March 2018 = 1440. Those magnificent girls from Team Guinot, the only formation wingwalking team in the world, entertain the crowds along Bournemouth sea front. Catalina Number of views as of 3rd September 2017 = 530. The superb Catalina flying boat, captured at Bournemouth Air Festival 2008. The Catalina was built by US manufacturer Consolidated Aircraft during the 1930s and 1940s and is probably the most successful flying boat ever built. The aircraft was very versatile and during WWII, Catalinas were used as anti-submarine warfare aircraft, patrol bombers, convoy escorts, search and rescue aircraft, and transports. Even today, over seventy years after its first flight, the aircraft continues to fly as an airtanker in aerial firefighting operations all over the world. Sea of Pink Number of views as of 16th April 2019 = 940. Participants in the 2012 'Race For Life' assemble in front of Bournemouth Pier (Dorset, England) prior to taking part in a 5k run/jog/walk along the promendade in aid of Cancer Research. The Bournemouth event is just one of approximately 240 taking place annually across the UK, each attracting thousands of entrants. Click here for more details or to make a donation. Dogfight over the Solent A Sopwith Triplane pursued by the enemy over the Solent, or as the pilot may have been heard to say "Get that Fokker off my tail!". Part of the 'Great War' display at Bournemouth Air Show 2017 (Dorset, England). The backdrop is of course the Needles and the Isle of Wight. Taken from the cliff top between Bournemouth and Boscombe piers on Day 3 of the show. Date: 2nd September 2017.

Close To The Edge Number of views as of 3rd October 2018 = 560. Beach huts and cliff scene at Branksome Dene, Poole, Dorset, England. The cliffs here are prone to erosion and inhabitants of dwellings close to the cliff tops occasionally lose parts of their gardens. The tree top left may survive the winter, or not. Date: 31st August 2009.

Coy Pond Gardens, September 2020 A recently installed new red bridge at Coy Pond Gardens, Branksome, between Poole and Bournemouth (Dorset, England). Date: 16th September 2020.

Boscombe Overstrand Panorama Number of views as of 8th October 2018 = 4200. A couple of miles east of Bournemouth, Boscombe is the site of Bournemouth's new artificial surf reef, unique in Europe and one of only 4 in the world, the others being Narrowneck, Queensland; Cables, Western Australia and Mt.Maunganui, New Zealand. The submerged reef occupies approximately one hectare (the size of a football pitch) and is 225 metres from the shoreline. The reef mimics the effects of a natural reef and is built from large geo-textile bags filled with sand. The Boscombe Overstrand building (centre shot) was designed in 1958, but has recently been transformed into a complex of 'surf pods', chic but not cheap beach accommodation overlooking the reef...

*Longham Lakes, November 2020* Longham Lakes (Dorset, England) are a pair of reservoirs, not far away from the towns of Bournemouth, Poole, Wimborne and Ferndown, and the smaller villages of Longham and Hampreston. The Lakes are one of my favourite spots in East Dorset, a haven for bird life and a popular retreat for fishermen, bird watchers and others just enjoying the countryside. Date: 4th November 2020.

Hengistbury Head Land Train The land train at Hengistbury Head (near Bournemouth, Dorset, England) carried passengers from the popular 'Hiker' cafe near the main car park down to Mudeford Spit and back, and ran every day of the year except Christmas Day. Known affectionately to locals as the 'Noddy Train', it had nothing whatsoever to do with Enid Blyton's character of the same name! Sadly, after many years of service, the original land trains have been replaced by a more modern vehicle. The journey is 1.5 miles and takes approximately 15 minutes. Date: 6th August 2016.
