It can live in both rivers and lakes. It can reach a maximum length of 43cm (about 17 inches) and a maximum published weight of 500g (about 1 pound).

It is a facultative airbreather, breathes mainly on gills with supplemental gas exchange from aerial breathing when conditions are poor or it is too costly to obtain oxygen from water. It feeds on any available food, including fish and other small vertebrates. It also scavenges off large carcasses and offal from riverside villages. It can reach a maximum length of 150cm (about 59 inches) and a maximum published weight of 55 kg (about 121 pounds).
