Aasleagh Lodge nearby is run as a fishing lodge, which is not surprising as I saw a huge salmon try to throw itself up the waterfall while I was preparing the shot. Unfortunately it had given up by the time I was ready...

The most common definition of the area is that it consists of West Galway; that is to say the part of the county west of Lough Corrib, contained by Killary Harbour, Galway Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. More restrictive definitions of Connemara define it as the historical territory of Conmhaícne Mara; just the far northwest of County Galway, bordering County Mayo. Eventing Chestnut Pony on Cross Country

The oldest part of this structure, the five-storey tower with the small windows at the eastern end, dates from the late 15th century. The manor house, the rest of the building, was added on in the 1630s by Conor O'Brien. He went and got himself killed fighting Cromwell's troops in 1651.
