The evocative and hypnotic whistle sound of the curlew... seemingly is an ever decreasing sounds along our UK coastal shores... but we do have them here along our shores near Caernarfon and at the nearby local reserve... they are just - not seen in abundance and are very tricky to spot..! Their scarcity and rarity is becoming more of a heightened crisis... The pressure for their decline besides that of such perilous migration journeys is that of 'habitat loss and degradation of coastal wetlands' which they depend upon to roost and feed across their non-breeding range. So this piece is a conservation awareness piece... suggesting that : "if we are not careful these graceful, iconic coastal species along with other waders and coastal...

Wetlands are vital for carbon storage and flood prevention. Unfortunately, they're also one of our most depleted and degraded habitats. Do you love wetlands? Why not show your appreciation for these underrated habitats with a prancing Eurasian curlew?

Gone are the days of the pinhole cameras ~ but when they were around ~ in the early days, they used to produce images like this... In the era and the advent of 'very early photography'... the idea of capturing a perfect image was unheard of, it was not 'quite as simple as point and shoot'... and it was all about ~ 'creating the Art!' It was about form, function, the essence of shape, texture, GRAIN ~ yes GRAIN..!!! I keep on hearing people in Camera Club banging on about there's no such thing as bad image only image... yes, I kind of agree, but also see that its based upon very fine quantified 'principles of photography'. To be frank and as I see it... that 'seldom many these days' truly capture... We can all take a pictu...

While out walking with my dogs in the fields behind Holywell Pond in Northumberland, a pair of Curlew flew near to a small pond and stayed long enough for me to capture my first photographs of these lovely birds. There was a thin covering of ice on the pond and the water reflected the blue of the sky which helped to make the bird easier to see as its feathers were a very good camouflage against the surrounding grassland.

This beautiful design combines the elegant Eastern Curlew with the movement of water within its wetland environment.

A play on words Curlew and 'Curlliw' ~ 'the colour' of a Curlew... aka "Gylfinir" in Welsh... Nice but even with a 560mm prime Pentax lens - it was too far away to capture in all its glory and cropping wouldn't have made much improvement either... but so far its my best Curlew in colour - flight shot... Will try again when the sun and sunlight is again right... just right... might use a 1.4 teleconverter next time.... Will have to see....

The Whimbrel, Numenius phaeopus, is a wader in the large family Scolopacidae. It is one of the most widespread of the curlews. Whimbrels feed by probing soft mud for small invertebrates and by picking small crabs and similar prey off the surface. Photographed in the mangroves in the estuaries of Qhepos, Costa Rica.
