Burger Chef was an American fast-food restaurant chain. It began operating in 1954 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Burger Chef spread across the United States, following a strategy of opening outlets in smaller towns. By 1972 its number of locations (1,200) was surpassed only by McDonald's (1,600). They offered a double burger, called the Big Shef, and later the quarter-pound hamburger, Super Shef. The chain had two mascots: Burger Chef (voiced by Paul Winchell) and Jeff (the chef's juvenile sidekick). They had the first Kids Meal, 5 years before McDonald’s, as well as the first fast food deal with Star Wars. "There's more to like at Burger Chef."

Remembering Bill Knapp’s Restaurants. If you traveled in the Midwest or Florida, it’s a good bet you ate a meal at Bill Knapp’s. At the height of its popularity, Bill Knapp’s operated 69 restaurants. The fare included steak, fish and fried chicken, au gratin potatoes, ham croquettes, cole slaw and those glorious, golden Bill Knapp’s biscuits. They also had meals in a basket, including the “Glorified Steakburger” that weighed in at a third of a pound and cost $1.95. And birthdays were a Bill Knapp specialty. The percentage you saved on your meal was equal to your age, For those of us who came of age in that era, a trip to Bill Knapp’s was a family tradition we’ll never forget.

Arthur Treacher's Fish & Chips was an American fast food seafood restaurant chain. At the peak of its popularity in the late 1970s, it had more than 800 restaurants. The chain's namesake is Arthur Treacher (1894–1975), an English character actor typecast as "the perfect butler" for his performances as Jeeves, as a butler in several Shirley Temple films, and the role of Constable Jones in Walt Disney Productions' Mary Poppins. At the time the chain was founded, Treacher was best known as the announcer and sidekick on the popular The Merv Griffin Show.

Steak and Ale grew to its height in the late 1980's with 280 locations. In 2008 the company behind the Steak & Ale chains filed for one of the largest restaurant bankruptcies ever and the chain's remaining 58 locations were closed as part of the bankruptcy proceeding.

Dan Blocker, who you might know better at Eric "Hoss" Cartwright, opened the first Bonanza in 1963. Two brothers, Sam and Charles Wyly bought the small restaurant chain 3 years later. By the late 1980's the Wyly brothers had opened roughly 600 locations. At this time both Bonanza and their rival Ponderosa were purchased by Metromedia. In the 1990's the two chains were unified as a single restaurant concept, but still operated under the Ponderosa or Bonanza name. There is currently 13 Bonanza locations still open.

Remembering Royal Castle Restaurants. Where I grew up we didn’t have White Castle or even White Tower, for us it was Royal Castle. If you wanted to buy a bag of miniature burgers, this was the place. Royal Castle was a chain throughout Florida, Georgia, Ohio, and Louisiana. It advertised its food as "Fit for a king!" Locals absolutely raved about the delicious burgers and their Birch Beer, a version of root beer.

The Hilltop Steakhouse was a chain of restaurants in Eastern Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire that existed from 1961 to 2013. The original location opened in Saugus, Massachusetts in 1961, and operated until 2013. In a hilltop location with a giant saguaro cactus sign, the restaurant was a landmark on Route 1 north of Boston. The last restaurant existed only as a butcher shop in Weymouth. The other locations with Hilltop restaurants were Hartford, Nashua, Braintree, and Springfield. Who can forget the 60 foot neon cactus sign? Great gift for Bostonians, New Englanders and Steak lovers.

Remembering Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour Restaurants. 1963 - 2019. Farrell's became known for their offer of a free ice cream sundae to children on their birthday. The parlors had an early 1900s theme, with employees wearing period dress and straw boater hats, and each location featured a player piano. By 1975, there were 120 Farrell's nationwide.
