The ”Big 4” American auto manufacturers couldn’t agree on too many things in the 1950s and ’60s, but one thing they could agree on, however, was the Borg-Warner T-10 four-speed transmission. Each of the manufacturers used the T-10 at some point during these years and even into the 70s in some applications. Because the transmission was used in so many production vehicles, they were easy to find, as well as being a reliable and strong four-speed, sought after by many racing enthusiasts of the time. They are still very popular with classic car and muscle car restorers today with the most popular version of the T-10 among enthusiasts being the Power Brute Super T-10 which used a 26-spline input shaft and were built to withstand the higher rpms.

At the height of the muscle car era, Oldsmobile made a deal with Hurst that worked out really well for both companies. In order to create a “halo” car, the two companies collaborated to produce special, limited edition, high-performance Cutlasses. The program started in 1968 with a run of 515 cars, and continued off and on for a number of years, with the final run in 1984, but for many fans, the 1968, 1969, and 1972 versions were the best out of the nine years these cars were offered. The inspiration for the production cars was the Hurst Hairy Olds of 1966-67, drag cars that made a huge impact – twin-engine, four-wheel-drive monsters that were really fun to watch.

White Pro Street style drag racers were really a big deal in the '80s, this 1973 iron-on featuring a tricked-out '64 Impala serves as an example that they were alive and well in the preceding decade as well.

In the '60s, chromed factory steel wheels had taken the shows and streets by storm. Fat-fendered radical customs with their chopped tops, sectioned bodies and other extensive modifications were falling out of favor, with radically painted late model cars now dominating the world of customs. It was around this time that several manufacturers saw that an affordably priced custom wheel was something that the hot rod and custom world desperately needed. Gardenia, California's Astro Custom Wheels was one of the many builders who threw their hat into the ring, making wheels that were equal parts show and go, so you could cruise the boulevard on Friday night, but tear up the quarter mile on Saturday morning.

The only way to get big stroke in the early decades of hot rodding was taking an existing crank, building up the journals through welding, and then machine finishing it, and that is what Alex Alexander had a knack for. As a welder, machinist, and avid hot rodder, Alex started making his own welded strokers in the '50s. As orders stacked up from word of mouth, he eventually had to admit that he had a business and formalized his operation as the less than creatively named 'Crankshaft Company' in 1965. From mild to wild, Crankshaft Company could build it and build it right, whether it was a street driven small block or a top fuel big block, the originator of the welded stroker could be counted on to go the distance.

By 1958 header builder Sandy Belond had assembled a small team and was selling his headers through more than 2,000 dealers and his business was hugely successful. Sandy sold the business to A-P Industries, better known as Appliance Plating, and by 1960 they had rebranded Belond Headers as Appliance. Appliance couldn't figure out how to run the business, so they hired Sandy to run it and he did so until his passing in 1988. Appliance-made headers continued to leverage Sandy's basic designs, but added their own bright white ceramic coating which in most cases, lasted longer than the engines they were bolted to which is no small feat for a coating on one of the hottest parts of a car.

The company was highly successful in promoting their products through sponsorships of motorsports ranging from flat track motorcycle racing and powerboats, to air racing and grand prix events, leveraging them to make their 'race proven' claims. Ring Free products continued to be popular throughout the '60s and '70s, but in as more high-tech formulas from new companies arrived in the '80s, Macmillan Oil Company's fortunes began to wane, and by the end of the decade, they had ceased operations.

AMC was notorious for taking on the big three in its own way. When it came to the muscle car market the AMC approach was unique, with performance that could give the big boys a run for their money. “The Machine” came with a flamboyant red, white, and blue paint scheme that made as much of statement as its 340-horsepower V8. From the factory this Rebel was poised as a street legal drag race car and could run mid-14s in the quarter mile. The distinctive ram-air hood scoop and hood-mounted tachometer contributed to the car’s performance-minded attitude. “The Machine” was no poser; developed in collaboration with Hurst Performance, it could put down the power via the “Twin-Grip” Positraction style differential.

In the early '70s, JuiceBox Performance Batteries were THE battery of choice for anyone running an extremely high compression and/or high cubic inch racing engine. So, what was the secret sauce? Unlike most traditional batteries with rubber casing, JuiceBox casings were made of polypropylene, which was about 75% thinner and 4x stronger. The extra space inside was used for more acid and more plates, resulting in batteries with 2x the cranking power of traditional builds. This meant that blown big block would turn over every time, even after a hot stall.

The 1969 Hurst/Olds again used the 455-cid V-8 with W-30 heads, cam, distributor, and Force-Air induction. This engine, called the W-46, was slightly detuned from ’68, losing 10 bhp. A H/O modified Turbo Hydra-matic transmission with console-shifted Hurst Dual-Gate was mandatory. As high performance raced into the wacky late ’60s, the idea of a mad scientist conjuring up ever-more-potent 4-4-2s seemed almost reasonable, and Olds advertising was rife with the image of Dr. Oldsmobile in his baggy lab coat and silent-movie mustache. In a sense, there really was such a fellow: Jack “Doc” Watson, head of research for Hurst Performance Products.
